Auckland, February 18. A settler named William Penzer, living near Mongonui, has been drowned through falling into a creek. He was riding across a bridge, which was under water owing to the floods, when his horse walked over the side, there being no hand-rails. Penzer leave| a wife and four children. President of the Bay of Islands, Walter*lrvine, who lived there for over forty years, died last night rather suddenly. .Wellington, February 19. Mr W. E. Mellish, solicitor, accidentally shot himself this morning. Death was almost instantaneous. Deceased was a son of Captain Hellish, EM. of Christchurch for many years, Waimate, February 19.

A nasty accident happened to Harry Howards at the Waimate bush to-day. He was falling some timber when a splinter Btruck him above the right eye, and inflicted a severe wound four inches in length. Ihveecabgill, February 19.

A traction engine crossing Menzies, ferry bridge over the Mataura river this evening broke through and fell into the river. Robert Dodd was killed and Andrew Simpson, the owner of the engine, severely shaken. The engine was. on its way from Dunedin, and was crossing the county bridge at the owner's risk. Lee, a well-known storekeeper at Queenstown, was found dead on the ranges about Skipper's. He had gone out on a' business round, and was last seen; about the 7th inst. There is no suspicion of foul play.
