CHANGES IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.
Few scholars, says the Academy, are aware of the great changes through which the English language has passed in successive centuries. Following are specimens of the Lord’s Prayer as used at various periods in English history A.D. 1158 —Fader ur heune, haleweide beith thi neane, cumin thi kuncriche, thy wille booth idon in heune and in ert’he. The euryeu dawe briend, gif ous thilk dawe. And votsif eurj detters as vi yorsifen ure dettoures. And lede us nought into temtation, bet delyvor eus of evel. Amen, " AD, 1300 —Fader ure in heavene,: halewyn be thi name, thi kingdom! come, thy wille be done as in hevenej and earthe—Our urche days bred give! us to daye, and forgive oure dettes as: we forgive oure dettoures; and lead us not in temptation, but delyver us of j yvil. Amen. A.D. 1370—Oure fadir that in are heunes, ballowid be thi nam, thi kingdom come to, be thi wille done in erthe, as in heune, geve to us this day oiiro. bred oure other substance, forgone to! us ourdettis as we forgauen to our dettouris, lede us not into tempation ;; but delveur us of yvel. Amen. A.D." 1524—0 oure father which arte in heven,’ halowed he thy name.; Let thy kingdom come. Thy wholl be fulfilled as well in earth *3 it is in heven. Give us this days our dayly 1 brede. And forgive us our trespacers, ! even as we forgive our trespacers. And lead us not into temptation, but delyver us from evell. Fyr tbyne is, the kingdom and the power and the glor'ye, for ever. Amen. A.D. 1561 —Our father which art in heaven, santified by thy name. Let thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, in earth also. Give us to-day our superstantial bread. And forgive us our dettes as we forgive our detters. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. A.D. 1711 —Our father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our dayley bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thyne is the kingdotne, and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen.
