TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

/The monthly meeting of the Temuka District High School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. Present —Messrs W. Storey (Chairman), W. Wills,. E. Brown, J. W. Velvin, and W. G. Eutland. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read From the Education Board, intimating the payment to the committee’s credit at the Bank of New Zealand, Temuka, of the sum of £ll 7s 6d, amount of incidentals for the first quarter. From the same, stating that Messrs John Talbot, Melville Gray, E. HPearpoint, William Balfour, and George H. Ehodes, had been nomi■>wfiated to fill the vacancies on the Board caused by the retirement of one-third of the members, and requesting the committee to forward, in writing, to the secretary, the names of not more than three persons whose names are on the list.—On the motion of Mr Velvin, seconded by Mr Eutland, it was resolved to vote for Messrs J Talbot, M Gray, and G FI Ehodes. . From the same, requesting the committee to nominate one person to fill the vacancy caused by the lamented death of Mr E A Barker. From Mr W Storey, intimating that he was aieandidate for the position of member of the Education Board of South Canterbury, rendered vacant by the death of the late Mr E A Barker. From Mr John Talbot, thanking the committee for the nomination of him to the Board of Education. From Mr M Gray, consenting to act as member jof the South Canterbury Education and thanking the committee for nominating him. EDUCATION BOARD NOMINATION. Some discussion ensued as to the nomination for tho vacancies in the Education Board, and tbe committee regretted, that the nomination being due on February 28th, comparatively time was given them in which to ftjnake selections, A member intimated that he understood that the Eev. J Willliams, of Timaru, was a candidate for election, on the motion of Mr Eutland, seconded by Mr Brown, it was resolved to nominate that gentleman for the vacancy caused by Mr Barclay’s retirement. The chairman having withdrawn, the committee considered further nominations, and after some conversation it was resolved to nominate Mr William Storey for election for the vacancy caused by the death of Mr E A Barker. Thera are 7 new secondary pupils, making, with the 7 who remain from 1 'ist year, 14 in all. The following requisites are needed : -6 boxes pens, 12 or more boxes slate pencils, 1 gross drawing pencils, 1 jar of ink. I enclose cheque for £2 Is 9d, amount of stationery fesa received up to date. I should feel obliged if you would obtain from the board 1 set of Clumbers’ Reading Sheets (to match primers), and 1 set of models, and if, besides, an alteration could be made in the floor of the largest infant-room, ao as to have a portion of it graded, it would add materially to the efficiency of our teaching.—l have, etc , W. It was resolved to procure the stationery asked for, and the secretary . was instructed to write to the board for a set of Chambers Reading Sheets, also to make enquiries re the cost of a set of models; should the price he moderate to obtain chairman’s consent and order the same. On the motion of Mr Wills, seconded bv Mr Brown, Mr Rutland was requested to visit the school and furnish the secretary with a rough estimate of the cost of grading a portion of the floor of the infant room as suggested by the headmaster. On receipt of the estimate the secretary to write to the < Education Board and apply for a grant :in aid of carrying out the work. THE RECENT EXAMINATION. Mr Wills drew attention to the excellent results of the last examination, and the honor reflected upon the school by the success of pupils at the recent scholarship examinations, He fe. paid a high tribute to the teaching tt»taff, and made special mention of the ■mention paid to scholarship pupils by W the second master. I resolved that the secretary write to the head master conveying the committee’s appreciation of the excellent werk of the staff during the past year, and congratulate him upon the result of the recent scholarship examination. He was also requested to convey to Mr T. Cheyne Farni©, in writing, their satisfaction at such successful results being attained. VISITOR. Mr Yelyin was appointed visitor for the month, ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £2 13s 6d were passed for payment. The meeting then terminated.
