MURDER OF A WIFE.

Adelaide, Feb. 2. A deliberate murder took place in Gillies street to-day, when a painter named Cbag. Lowenthali shot bis wife, who bad separated from her husband and taken a position as servant at tbe Creche, owing to her husband's intemperate habits, Lowenthali went to the nursery and saw bis wife sitting on a doorstep in a passage with a baby on her knee. In a menacing voice he demanded of his wife one of his children, bat she declined to give it up, stating that as he c >nld not keep himself be oonld not keep bis children. He called bis little girl, who was playing at her mother’s side, and when she attempted to ran sway be snatched up iu bis arms tbe child which his wife had been nursing. His wife rushed after him and succeeded in getting the baby from him. He then palled a revo ver from his pocket and fired five shots at tbe woman. Three of the ballets took effect, one entering her head, another her side, sod the third her thigh. The infant received a bullet lr. his thigh, and his clothes were set on fire. The fifth ball went down tbe passage, narrowly missing the little sister of the matron of the institu ion, Detfpive Rae who lives opposite the woman arrested the husband, and the woman was taken to the Adelaide Hospital. Her dyi g deposition has been taken, and no hope is entertained of her recovery.
