; Christchurch, Feb. 9. | On Sunday afternoon three young; men, named George Petrie, W. Moore,! and W. Webster, went to. theEakaia! riverbed to bathe. The two former i went into 4he water, when Petrie 1 happened to get out of his depth.' W. Moore, who heard .him calling for help, rendered alt the assistance in his power, but as he was' only able to swim a short distance, and being a far johnger boy than the deceased, he could only catch hold of his arm and try to drag him ashore. Being,unable, to do this, he then -gave him a branch of a willow-tree overhanging the water, but this broke as deceased caught hold of it, as did another branch, the deceased then sank. Ihe constable was at once informed and went to the scene, and the body was recovered after about three hours’efforts. The deceased was between seventeen and eighteen years of age, and his parents live at the Kowai Bush.
Q-eexmouth, Feb. 10. An attempt was made last evening to wreck . the down train from Brunnerton by placing a heavy sleeper across the rails, '.'here is no clue to the delinquent. Dunedin, Feb. 11. Kate Joyce, aged seven years, was burned to death through her clothes catching fire. An elder sister was also burned in attempting to rescue her. Sergeant Finnegan, who has been connected with the police force in Otago for thirty years, died this afternoon.
