CHAMPION ATHLETIC MEETING.
Auckland, Feb. 6. The Athletic and Bicycling Chamioonship Meeting, under the auspices of the New ZenHnd Amateur Athletic Association nod Cyclists’ Alliance, opened to-day. About 2030 persons were present. The weather was beautiful, sport throughout whs capital, and the times excellent, the New Zealand amateur record being broken in many cases. The results of the championships were : Three-Mile Walk—A. F. Burton (Auckland) 1, H. S. Cocks (Chrislchurch) 2, G. Pearce (Auckland) 3. There were six starters. Bailey, the only Sydney competitor, when goiog well, was disqualified for breaking. Won by about eight yards. Time, 23min. 37 1-lOthsec. Two Hundred and Fifty Yatds Flat— W. T. Macpherson (Sydney) I, J. N. King (Wellington) 2, A. B. Sefton (Sydney) S Two others started. Won easily. Time, 24 3-16tha sec.
Fiver Mile Bicycle Race—A. C. Wilmot (Christchurch) 1, S, R. Steadman (Faieri) 2, t, Ledsham (Christchurch) 3. Four others started. Won by fifteen yards. Time, ISmin. 58 4-10tha sec. High Jump—Hume (Wellington) and Lawrie (Auckland) each cleared 6ft. 3£in. Half»Milo Flat—D. Wood (Cbiiatchurcb) 1, G. F. Gruraon (Christchurch) 2, W. W. Winks (Auckland) 3. One other started. Time, 2min. One Hundred and Twenty Yards Hurdles—B. W. Bitger (Wellington) 1, W. J. Moir (Christchurch) 2, B. Owen (Auckland) 3. These were the only starters. Won easily. Time, 16 2-sths sec.
Ten-Mile Bicycle Race—A. C, Wilmot (Chrisohuroh) 1, S. R. Steadman (Taieri) 2, Selby (auckhed) 3. Three others started, but only the placed men finished. Won after a magnificent race between Wilmot and Steadman. Time, 33min. 2l£aec. Long Jump—CJpfill (Auckland), 20ft, 4ft,, I, Mackay (Auckland) 2, Bitger (Wellington) 3. Upfill subsequently jumped 20ft. 9iu,, beating the New Zealand record.
One-Mile Flat—D. Wood (Christchurch) 1, O. E. Corner (Sydney) 2, G. F. Grierson (Ohri tchurch) 3. One other started. Time, 4min. 3laec. Feb. 7.
Tbe meeting was concluded to-day, when 6000 or 7000 people were present on tbe domain grounds. There wae excellent wentber, and the racing was capital. Batger beat tbe world’s amateur record (62aec.)in the quarter-mile.hurdles. The following are the results of the championships : One-Mile Walk— A. F. Barton (Auckland) 1, H. S. Cocks (Canterbury) 2, G. Pearce (Auckland) 3. Seven started. Won by about five yards. Bailey (Sydney) was again disqualified for breaking. Time, 7min. 6£sec. One Hundred Yards Flat—W. T. MacphersoD (Sydney) J, J. M. King (Wellington) 2, A. E, Sefton (Sydney) 3. Laird (Auckland) and Schwarlzkoff (Sydney) also started. Time, 30sec. One-Mile Bicycle Race—A. C, Wilmot (Christchurch) I, P. Ledsham (Christchurch) 2, B. E, Steadman (Taieri) 3. Hayward (Christchurch) and Howard (Auckland) also started. Hayward fell in the last lap when occupying a prominent position. Won easily. Hayward protested against the winner on the ground that he had jostled him and brought him down, but it was disallowed. Time, 2mio. 58sec. Three-Mile Race—D, Wood (Christchurch) 1, J. E. T. Corner (Sydney) 2, K. J, White 3. Clark (Auckland) also ran. Won by a couple of yards. Time, 15min. 40 2-sths sec.
Quarter-Mile Hurdle Race—H. W. Batger (Wellington) I, Moir (Christchurch) 2. These were the only starters, Won easily. Time, 61 2-bths sec. Quarter-Mile Flat Race—W. T. Macpherson (Sydney) 1, C. Hutchison (Auckland) 2, J. M. King (Wellington) 3. Won by two yards. Tune, 60 2-sths sec. Fifteen-Mile Bicyc e Race—W. J. Hayward (Christchurch) 1, Wilmot 2. Buchanan (Auckland) 3. Won by nearly ha f a mile. Time, Ih. 2min. 45sec.
Putting the Weight —T. O’Connor (Auckland) 1, McKay 9, Moir 3. Pole Jump—Upfil 1 , 9 ft. 10d, 1, Hume
Auckland won the banner for the highest number of points, Ohratchnrch 2, and Wellington 3.
