ELECTION.
The secretary reported that there were five nominations for the three seats to be declared vacant, viz., Messrs Talbot, Gh-ay, Pearpoint, G. H. Rhodes, and W. Balfour.
Mr Goldsmith was appointed to represent the board on the Waimate High School Board. PBOPOSED EXPENDITUEE. The building committee submitted a schedule of works they recommended to be undertaken out of the funds available, to a total cost of about £960. The works recommended were a new school at Pleasant View; enlargements at Belfield, Upper Waitohi, Adair, Kingsdown, Rangitira Valley; paiuting and repairs at Waimataitai, Kakahu Bush, Timaru, Waimate, Pairview, Albury, Burke's Pass, Eangitata South, Q-apes's Yalley, and Hunter; fencing and roofing at Milford ; furniture, fencing, etc., at Sandhurst, Seadown, Arundel, Waitaki, and Hilton.
SCHOLARSHIPS. Mr &myth, for the scholarship committee, reported that last year there were only 17 candidates, this year there were 37—6 senior and 31 juniors—representing ten schools as against nine last year. Of the number 20 qualified themselves for scholarships, but as the funds were limited the committee recommended the board to grant scholarships as indicated by the sums placed opposite the names : Sebiobs (possible total marks 950). The report was adopted, with the thanks of the board to the committee for the work so willingly undertaken.
SENDEES. Tenders ware received as follows : Kingsdown extension —Tubb, £75 10s (accepted) ; Tooth, £75 15s; Sullivan, £BO. Eangitira Valley extension— Higgins, £42 10s (accepted) ; Clinch and Lloyd, £54 10s. TEACHEBSHIPS. The Waimataitai Committee wrote recommending, by a vote of 4 to 3, Mr J. Greaves for the headteacher--Bhip.—A. protest signed by 45 householders was sent against this selection, on the ground that the most suitable applicant was not chosen, and that personal friendship bad weighed too much with the committee. —After a few remarks by members Mr Greaves was'appointed unanimously. Mr Archibald (now locum tencns at Waimataitai) was appointed to Upper Waitofci, and Mr J. Lowe to Waitaki Village. Eangitata Island recommended Miss Oxby for appointment, but as she is now locum tenens in another school for which she may be recommended, the case was allowed to stand over.
CASE TOB ENQUIRY. A letter from the master at Upper Waitohi stated that a letter he had written to the board, and sent through the committee had, he learned, been entrusted to a member of the committee to bring to Timaru, enclosed with one from the committee, and that the committeeman so entrusted with it had abstracted it, and still retained it. —The statement to be sent to the committee for an explanatien of the extraordinary conduct charged against one of their number, WOODBtfBY, Woodbury asked for a special grant of £lO for repairs.—£s was granted on condition that the committee raise £5 more. inspectob's expenses. In view of the incseased number of schools to be visited, the inspector asked for some addition to his fixed allowance for travelling expenses.— £lO per annum extra was granted. The meeting then terminated.
