The Government has re-captured Piragua. Twelve thousand of the Chilian army have joined the rebels. LABOR QUESTIONS. London, February 1. The steamer Hulbeck, for Melbourne, was stoned when leaving the dock, and several of her crew, shipped by the Federation, were preyented from going on board. Mr Fitzgerald, the Australian labor delegate, received an ovation on his departure. A launch containing the Labor Council, representing twenty-two Unions, followed the Ormuz to Tilbury, February 2. There is a growing diseontent with the system of dock charges which comes into operation to-day. Pig iron is falling, owing to the collapse of the railway strike. It is expected that the terms of settlement will be disputed by the Scotch furnace-men. A proclamation issued by tbe Shearers’ Union in the central districts states that it has beeen unanimously resolved that any member ot the Pastoralists* Union not accepting the shearers’ agreement before the end of March will have to pay an additional Si per hundred for shearing, Wages under the Labourers’ Union are being increased pro rata. The ballot of members of the Railway Servants’ Society on the question of affiliation with the Maritime Council resulted in a majority in favor of withdrawal from connection with that body.
IRISH AFFAIRS. London, February 2 . Mr Parnell, speaking at Ennis, said that in a few days they would know that he bad secured a really independent Parliament for Ireland, having power to settle the land question and to bare full control of the police. If Ireland stood fast it would become the sovereign of its own domain, and shortly win a settlement that would be creditable to its patriotism. February 3. The Times states that Messrs Parnell and O’Brien proceed to America to collect funds in aid of the evicted tenants in Ireland ; also that Mr Dillon will sureeader himself to the authorities to undergo the six months’ imprisonment imposed on him by the Tipperary bench, on condition that the Irish party choose him their leader next session, Mr Justin McCarthy acting in that position meanwhile. The Standard declares that the Liberal leaders, with the exception of Sir Vernon Harcourt, are willing to agree that an Irish Parliament shall have control of the police and the settlement of the land question, but insist upon the right of Imperial veto.
