PROPOSED NEW WATER-RAGE,

A meeting of ratepayers occupying land between the Cave and the Point met at the schoolhouse, Pleasant Point, on the 28th January to discuss a proposed water-race. There Were forty-eight persons present. Mr Balfour, the chairman, and Mr Marchant, the engineer, of the County Council, attended to ascertain the views of the ratepayers and to explain the necessary steps to be taken, Mr Baltour took the chair, and said as well as be remembered the area iu the proposed district was not defined. Mr Acton said the area was defined in the petition as being half-a-mile on each side of the Cave road. Two schemes were brought up for discussion. One to bring the water on the flat, the other on the downs. Mr Bishop represented the views of the former, and Mr Orbell the latter. Those living on the flat objected to the extra cost of bringing the water to the downs. To meet the objection Mr Orbell, as representing the New Zealand Land Company, said they were willing to extend the area for rating purposes. Mr Marchant said in ordinary seasons there would be sufficient water from the Tengawai for the proposed larger area, hut he did not think there would be sufficient water if another race was carried to the downs on the north side of the river. Mr Orbell stated that the proposed Irrger area would include about 4000 acres of the Company’s land, and they would be prepared to pay in proportion. Eventually the following resolution was passed unanimously:—“ That the Geraldine County Council be requested to have alternate surveys made as to the probable cost of constructing water races in the first proposed district, including those that can be benefited above and below the Point, and also of the proposed race

on the downs, taking in, say, forty chains bade from Monroe’s road.” The report is to be laid before another meeting.
