dan. 30. Mr C, Bradlaagh, M P, for Northampton, died to-day, aged 47, A shipment of Adelaide canned fruit is of fairly satisfactory quality but too expensive for British market. Tbe leaders of tbe Liberal party are not opposed to the issue of one pound bank notes, bnt the joint stock and private banks object to tbe proposal on the gronnd that it will compel them to hold larger reserves. Tbe proposed issue of ten shilling notes against tbe security of silver has been favourably received in financial circles.

The appeal case of Duncan y. Knowles was argued to-day. Xu August last Miss Gladys Knowles, 21 years of age and of attractive appearance, was awarded £lo,@oo damages at the Lewis assizes against Mr L. F. Duncan, editor and proprietor of the Matrimonial News, aged between 63 and 64, for breach of promise of marriage, and it was from this decision that the latter appealed. The court ordered that the amount of damages be reduced to £6200 on condition that the costs in the action were paid by Mr Duncan within one month, otherwise the verdict of the jury to remain in tact. Paris, Jan. 29. It is feared that the French Transport Annamilo, bound for Tonquin, with 700 troops on board, has foundered in the Levant. ■ Eyraud, found guilty of murdering Qouffe, has bad the death sentence commuted. The Marine Board will recommend the Government to assist Captain Jorgensen in perfecting his patent life boat the Storm King. They suggest that New South Wales and Victoria should subscribe the £BOO required to carry out the work. Over three thousand contributors to the Premier Permanent Building Society have been called on to pay op arrears and fines. The notification has fallen like a bomb-shell, many having declined to pay after the collapse of the company. The amount involved Is believed to be upwards of £30,000,
