FATAL AFFRAY WITH CHINESE.
Dunedin, Jan, 31. A very exhaustive inquiry was held before Mr Carew, the coroner, and a jury, touching the death of William Guy, 26 years of age, a milkman, who died owing to an injury alleged to have been received in an affray with Chinamen in Chalmers’ Place. King, who* was with Gray, said that he was the worse of liquor at the time of the occurrence, and that Guy also had had a good many drinks. He did not remember giving any provocation to the Chinese, Dr Coughtrey, in his evidence, said that an operation was Guy’s only chance. He died from traumatic peritonitis accompanied by a breach in the continuity of the bowels, the breach being a hole in the bowel. The causes of death bad been going on from the time he met with the injury. The most important witness was Adam Scott, aged 14, and his brother. They saw Guy and King speaking to the Chinamen and afterwards following them into their house. They then saw the Chinamen being slung out of their own house, and a fight started, during which Ah Tam rushed into his house and coming out with a bamboo hit Guy with it. Guy then went away limping. The jury found that Guy had died as the result of an injury inflicted by Ah Tam who acted under extreme provocation. Ah Tam was found guilty of manslaughter, and was committed for trial, but admitted to bail, Gee Ley was discharged.
