Stjakim, Jan. 28. A smart engagement has taken place with the D-rvishes outside the town. The English troops have occupied Handoub. Washinghon, Jan. 28. A train conveying seventy cavalrymen, who had distinguished themselves in tha recent fighting with the Indians, collided with an express in Kansas. Both trains were wrecked with great loss of life. The appeal of Canada against the seizure of the fhhing vessel in the Behring Sea had b-en referred to Dr Field, Asßociate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United (States. He states that it being a political question he cannot adjudicate. The suit instituted by tbe merchants of St. Louis to test the validity of tbe McKinley Tariff Aet has resulted in favor of the Act. An appeal has been lodged. ihere is a renewed scare about the Indians.

Mr Munro, Premier, hae wired to the Agent-General that the Governments of Victoria and Tasmania feel that the colonies should be allowed to negotiate commercial treaties direct with the European Powers, and urges him to inquire whether there is any insuperable objection to that course, South Australia agrees with this. Strong weather is forecasted during the next few days between Gabo Island, Hobart, and lb.a Bluff. Jan. 29. Important disclosures have been made in connection with the beer and spirit trade in Queensland. An engraver has couffssed to making plates of Foster's and Bass's Übel6, also of others including the leading brands of whiskey. The methods of working up the beer, it edifying, were not over pleasant. As was shown in one case a lump of meat was thrown into the vat and left there till the beer had obtained the proper flavor. The police are instituting proceedings against those coqneQted with the swindles.
