CHRISTCHUBCH CORN EXCHANGE
The following is the Corn Exchange report (por ft. P. Meyers, Secretary), for the week ending Friday, January 30th •
Farming operations are now in full swing, aDd the town preeentß an especially quiet appearance on market days. Only a few lines have as .yet been thrashed and put on the market, and from what we can learn the prospects in general aie not bo gloomy as was at one time expected. The samples submitted are bright and clean, but not heavy. The outside demand is only of a retail nature, dealers are waiting for a more decided development of the markets before launching into larger speculations. Milling wheat (old) has a fair local enquiry among local millers, and whole chick wheat iB wanted in small lines. Oats ar<) dull with plenty of old and new offering at our quotations. Barley remaius inactive, but in grass seed tLe enquiry is brisk, and farmers should have no trouble in effecting sales. Cocksfoot is also asked for, but prices asked, by growers has precluded business up to the present. Quotations as follow::
Wheat Tuscan, 3s 8d ; pearl, 3s 6d to 3s 7d ; hunters, 3s 4d to 3a sd; whole chick, 3a to 3s 2d; broken, 2s 9d to 3s.

Eye Grass—Town machine dressed, 4u 9d tp 58; farmers machine dressed, 4s to 4s 6d ; ordinary, 3a to 3s Sd< Dairy Produce—Butter, factory, 7d to 8d ; farmers keg, 6d to 7d ; cheese, (small size) 3£d to 4d. The above prices are those paid to farmers for delivery, f.o.b, Lyttelton, sacks extra. OHRISTOHUROH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington yards on Wednesday, with the exception of the sheep and pig sections, the market was very small. Fat Cattle—Only 107 head of cattle were yarded, and, as a result, the price advanced a trifle on last quotations, recent markets having ! been glutted. Nearly every beast was sold. Best bullocks, £6 12s 6d and I heifers £5 15a, equal to from 16s to 20s per 1001 b: inferior quality sold at from 12s 6d upwards. Store Cattle—ln store cattle only 60 head were yarded, including dairy | cows. The demand for old cows has not. been, affected by the change in weather, as only a few changed hands, Good milkers sold at from £3 10a to £6 2s 6d.
Fat Over 6000 fat sheep were in the sale pens, and a fair demand existed, particularly fir lines of prime crossbred wetherß for freezing. The first of these sold from 13a 8d to 14s 6d, and some other heavyweight wethers realised a similar price. Ordinary sorts of crossbred ewes brought from 9s to 12s, according to weight, and some very nice merino wethers also sold well. Store oheep—There was an entry of about 2500 Btores, and a much better demand existed for good sorts in small lots. Kverv line was cleared as under :—Crossbred 2-tooths, mixed sexes, 7s 4d to 10s 3d ; dry crossbred ewes. 5s 6d ; two lines of lambs, 5s 4d and 7 s 7d ; merino wethers, Is 101 to 3s 8d i hifteeu hundred lambs were yarded, and met with a slightly improved market from, the last week, though not quite on a par with former sales and, as a result, a good few were withdrawn. Prime freezers brought from lis 9d.to 13s lOd; ordinary sorts, 7s to 10a 6d. Figs—About 200 were entered. Stubblerß fetched very good prices, and were eagerly snapper 1 up at from 5s 6d to 8s for weaners and from 13* to 18s for those three months old. I'orkers realised an average ol 3£d per lb, and some very prime.a trifle over. The demand was weak.
DUNEDISf PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday : Wheat—Market without change. Prime lots tuscan and velvet sell at from 3a 9d to 3s lOd; other sorts, 3s6ito3sßd, Fowl wheat is in good demand Good whole wheat is worth 3s 4d to 3s 5d ; medium, 3a 2d ; inferior and broken, 2s 9d to 3a. Oats—Very little doing in thi> line at present. Shippers hold off with the expectation of buying at leas inout'y, now that one ortwo speculators have supplied their wants. Good milling up to Is 6J ; prime short feed, Is s£d to Is Od ; medium, Is 4d to Is sd. Flour—Timaru roller, £lO in sacks, £lO 15s in 50's; Southern stone, £9 in sacks, £9 10s in 50's. Oatmeal—ln 25's, packed in sacks, £9; bulk, £9 Bran, 50a ; sharps, 703. Potatoes—lf prime kidneys, £3 15<; for small and inferior lots, £2 10a to £3.
Pigs—Dull of sale. Heavy weights, 2d ; well-fed, suitable sizes, 3d. There is no demand for hams and bacon, and the market is glutted. Chaff—Good oaten sheaf, 45s to 47s 6d ; other sorts, 80s to 40s. Straw—Oaten and wheaten, 30s. B u tter—Good salt, nominally 6d (nothing doing in this line) ; fresh (very plentiful), 3d to 4d. Eggs—Scarce. i
Honey—. Wanted, 4d to sd. Cheese—Factory : Large ,si,ze, 4£d ; small size, 4|rd. Akaroa: Good quality,3id ; medium, 4d..
Sheepskins—On Tuesday, country, dry crossbreds, inferior to medium, brought Is 7d to 3s 8d ; do do merino, lsGdto 3a 4d ; fuli-woolied crossbreds, 4a 3d to 6s 7d ; do do merino, 3s lOd. to 6s ;.dry.pelts 5d to Is 6d ; green crossbred .pelts, 2s Id to Is 3d : do do lambskins, 2s to Is 5d each. Hides—For good to best, 2£d to 3d ; medium, 2d to 2|d ; light, l£d to lid; inferior and slippy, Id to lid per lb. Tallow—Prime. rendered mufcton, 19s to 20s; medium to .good, 16s to 13s ; inferior and mixed, 12s to 15s 6d. Rough fat: Clean fresh mutton caul, 138 to 14s; inferior ,to medium and good, 10s to 12s 9d per cwt. DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS.
At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday the following business was transacted :
Fat Cattle—lß4 head were yarded. Competition for prime cattle was fairly active, prices ruling about the same as last week, but there was no demand tor indifferent quality, several being turned out unsold. Best bullocks brought £7 to £8 12s 6d; medium to good, £5 to £6 7s 6d; light, £3 10s to £4 17s 6d; cows in proportion. Fat Sheep—2o2B were penned. Prices ruled from from 6d to Is per head under those obtained last week. Best crossbred wethers brought 12s 6d to 13s 9d ; a small pen extra prime, 14s 6d ; medium, lCs to 12s; best do ewes, lis to 12s; a few extra prime to 13s 9d ; medium, 7s 6d to 10s; merino wethers to 10s 9d.
Fat Lambs—Prices ruling showed a drop of quite Is per head on those obtained last week. Best brought 8s to 9s 3d ; others, 5s 3d to 8s 9d. Pigs—2oo were penned, Prices ruled about the same as last w?ek,, suckers bringing 5s 6d to 9s; slips, 10s to 12s 6d ; : stores,. 15s, 6d to 18a 6d ; porkers, 21s tp 245; baconers, 28s to 40s ; one or two extra heayy to 48s. ' DUNEDIN WOOL SALES. Dunedin, Jan. 29. The third series of wool sales was commenced to-day. There was a good attendance of buyers. The effect of. the news from London was that competition was brisk throughout, and prices for choice half breds were rather firmer. Bright crossbreds, too, were in better request, and Bbow.ed an improvement. Earthy, discolored, and badly got up were neglected. Greasy half bred, light and bright, realised 9d to I2id ; do heavy and earthy, 7d to B|d ; do crosabred, 7d to Merinos were dull of Bale and diaappinting in price, bringing from s£d to lo|d. Scoured merino, 15d to AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, January 28 Wheat—Chick, 3s 2d to 3a 3d ; milling, 3s 9d to 3s lOd. Oats, Is lOd to 2s ; maize, 3s 8d to 3s 9d. Barley Cape, 2a 6d ; English feeding, 3* Bran, 7£d; pollard, B£d ; peas (blue Prussians), 4-*; potatoes, £4 3s to £4 10s ; onions, £5 Butter—Dairymade, 7d ; separator, 8d ; factorymade, 9d. Cheese, loaf size, s£d. Bacon —Machine-cured, 4d to 5d ; hand cured, 6d to 7£d ; New Zealand cured, 9d to 9£d ; hams, New Zealaud, lid to Id. Melbourne. January 28.
Wheat, 3i 7d Flour—Stone makes, £7 10a to £8 ; roller makes, £8 10s to £9. Oats-Calcutta; Is 9'; stout quality, 2a B|d to 2s 10|d M&ize, 3s 3d. Barley—Cape, Is 9d. Bran, B£d to 9d. Adelaide, January 28.
Wheat—Firm, 3s Bid. Flour— Stone makes, £7 10a to £8; roller, £8:10s to £9. range up to 3s. Barley—Malting, 3« to 4s Bd, Bran, 9d ; pollard, B|d. Sugar—Beet whites, £23 5s 1-NGLI4H MARKETS.. London, January 27. The wool sales opened firmly at the early rates of last series. Competition was keen. Eight thousand quarters of Australian wheat, prompt delivery, have sold at 375. Jan. 28. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for die United Kingdom is 1,996,000 quarters, and for the Continent 752,000 quarters. The wool arrivals to date are 370,000 bales, of which 52,000 have been sent to the manufacturing districts. Tallow—Best mutton, 27s to 27s 6(1; beef, 25s 6d to 265. Hides are in fair demand. Best ox, B£d to3£d per lb. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following cable message from Loudon, dated 27'h iust. :
Wool—The sales opened this day at the levelof last sales, except for fine greasy crossbred, for which ihe market is firmer. 'lhe attendance of both Home and foreign buyers is good. Bayers are operating with spirit. The total quantity available, including wool held over from last series, is 382,000 bales, 52,000 bales of which have been forwarded to thai manufacturing districts direct. I
Wheat—Market weaker, owing to ' mild weather. New Zealand wheat, f.a q., to arrive iron, ship, is worth, c.i.f, 37s 3d per. 4801b,'; JanuaryFebruary bill of. lading. Other, quotations unchanged, since last telegram,. Eabbitskine—The demand is moderate ; market lower.
