AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

It would seem as though January 1891 was going to make its mark in the history of the colonies as a month of great floods, as there are reports from all parts of New South Wales that the various rivers are rising and floods are expected, As much as 6in has fallen in some of the Riyerina districts, and at latest advices it was still " literally streaming " down. On Friday afternoon a man was seen to throw himself from the rocks at Shelly Beach, Manly, near Sydney, aud as he fell into the water a heavy tide washed round him and he disappeared. On the rocks were found a hat and coat, and in one of the pockets was a letter written as a warning to men against the influence of women. The writer said that he had won the affections of a girl who had jilted him for another just as she had previously jilted the second man to keep company with the writer, In consequence ot her action he expressed his intention of committing suicide. A very sad disaster occured one afternoon last week at Bryan's Creek, near Morgan, South Australia. Four ladies, who were with a picnic party, were bathing in a creek when they fell into a deep hole. None of them could swim. Elizabeth Schell, aged 19 was drowned, and her body was recovered. Rose Geerskens was rescued and recovered consciousness. Josephine Schell (the wife of Mr Edward Schell of Randelltown) and her sister, Miss Horn, were both drowned, and their bodies have not bees recovered. A strange case of infanticide is reported from Wellington Point, on the coast, near Brisbane. Arthur M. Savage, the licensee of the Wellington Point Hotel, was playing with his infant daughter, aged eight months, on Friday afternoon. He took her to a swamp about a quarter of a mile away and threw her in. The body was afterwards recovered, life being extinct. Savage was arrested. He stated that he had been taken in financial difficulties lately, and was suffering from temporary insanity.
