IRISH AFFAIRS.
London, Jan. 20, Sir Henry James, speaking at Bury, said it was essential there should be some sort of home rule in Ireland, but when conceded it must be final, and not merely a stepping stone to separation, Mr Parnell has issued a circular to all Irish members of the House of Commons summoning them to attend a meeting of the party. Jan. 21. Mr O’Brien told an interviewer that the difficulty was partially settled on conditions that be thought would prove satisfactory to all parties in Great Britain. Mr Parnell intends to appoint a delegate to visit Australia on his behalf. GENERAL BOOTH’S SCHEME. London, Jan. 20. General Booth intends to make a tour through Norway and Sweden on behalf of bis scheme. General Booth stated that £IOO,OOO have been subscribed towards his scheme, and be intends to hold a thanksgiving meeting in commemoration of the success of bis appeal for funds . Professor Huxley has published a pamphlet opposing General Booth’s proposals. Bishop Moorhoase approves of the scheme. LABOR QUESTIONS. London, Jan. If. Trains have been stormed at Greenock. The blacklegs are striking becanse the Directors of the Railway Companies refuse to recognise their anion. The effect of the strike is most disastrous to trade, the loss already being estimated at half a million, Tha Shipping Federation are enrolling additional free laborers. Jan. 20, The excitement among the men employed on the Great Western Company’s system or railways at the refusal to limit the hours to ten per day is likely to cause a strike. The waterside Unions are boycotting the British India, Shaw, Baville and Albion Company, and the New Zealand Whipping Company’s vessels. The Shipping Federation are loading and unloading them. Trouble is brewing in South Clare, and the railway men have struck, Jan 21. Numbers of drivers and stokers have stopped work on tha Caledonian Company’s line and a collapse is expected. The labourers engaged on the relief works at Sklbbreen and Bantry, County Cork, have struck for an advance in wages. The Edinburgh Town Council will petition the Board of Trade to interfere in the Scotch railway strike.
GOLD AND DEATH, Perth, Jan. 21. There are now 400 men on the new goldfield, where iwo nuggets of 140 and 40oz have been found, and it is reported that another of 200 oz has been unearthed. Ihe field is overcrowded, 4nd cnly half ofthe men are doing well. One pany of three n s n have died from thirst on the Ashburton field, and another party is missing. .*• Nearly all the the retail shops employing assistan's in Adelaide close at 6 o’clock on Saturday evening, and to mark the consummation of the movement ihe Early Closing Sliding Scale Demonstration held a long procession, which was joined by representatives from nearly all the trades in Adelaide and suburbs, and marched through the principal Street?)
