S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting of the S.C: Board of Education was held on Thurpriay. Present—Mef-srs S. W. Go dsmith (chairman), J. J»ck*on, It, A. Barker,'W.'B. Unwell, J. t'a hot, M. Gray, and Rev. J Ktuyihe. A letter from the departmen l stated that the total vote of £35,000 f>r school buildings had been divided, first on the principle of Is per head of the census. This absorbed £28,647. The balance was then divided among the districts so as to give an advan'nge to the pm»Her districts. The share of this board on the Is per head was £1152 ; and this had been made up on (lie second division to £IBOO. It was stated that the building fund was now in debt to the maintenance fund about £I3OO, so that when this was repaid there would be only £SOO for building, unless the other fund were again drawn upon.—lt was resolved, on the motion of Mr Talbot — " I hat the building committee bB authorised to instruct the architect to prepare plans and specifications for such additions to existing schools as may be deemed most urgently required. An account from the architect gave rise to a good deal of discussion, and it was resolved on the motion of Mr Howell, " That a return belaid on the table at next meeting, showing the amounts paid to the architect for commissions, travelling expenses, and personal expenses, for one year, and the percentage of such payments to the expenditure on buldings." r l he inspector submitted reports on schools examined, Ac-, pass results being as follow, (A percentage of passes; B, percentage ot failures; Qi percentage of class subjects ; D,

The board would suggest using one of the larger rooms for the infants as the present overcrowding seems to be accountable for the difficulty complained of."
