"THE LADIES.” TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —The gentleman who proposed the toast of “ The Ladies” on a recent interesting occasion at G-eraldine prese£*ed a side of the question which, however much may be said of it, leaves the main part of the subject very much in the background. I fancy the ladies did not feel that they received full justice. At any rate, I was mentally supplying an addendum somewhat in the strain of the following doggerel. Higher education and the graces and accomplishments that please in society may be all very well, but the testing qualities of woman lie in another direction. The speaker remarked that he had never met a lady who could play chess. Chess indeed !
Who sews our buttons, mends our clothes, And so divinely'darns our hose That where the hole was no one knows ? Skilled woman ! Who gratifies our every wish With many a rich and savoury dish, Smiling the while, what better relish % Kind woman ! Who spreads abroad our fame and glory, Exaggerates each wondrous story, Whi we pretest, but are not sorry I Fond woman 1 Who cheers us who are public men, Helping us brave the critic’s pen, To all our prayers adds her Amen ? True woman ! Who’s filled with grief when we are sad, And full of joy when we are glad. And all our footsteps follows hard 1 Dear woman ! Who tends us when wa have a cold, Whose loving arms around us fold When jilted by soms hussy bold ? Sweet woman 1 In fine, her price is above money : She’s sweeter than the sweetest honey, Brighter than day, even when ’tia sunny— Fair woman ! j Geraldine. A.K, 1
