THE HARVEST.

We are glad to learn from all parts of the district that the harvest prospects are not half so bad as was anticipated. The recent rain did a great deal of good, and it is expected that though the yield will be below the average it will come out very fair in the end Light land, of course, has suffered severely, but the crops on rich lands are very good, and there are not a few who expect 35 and 40 bushels per acre if not more. Between the railway and the sea the crops are very good, and there is nothing at all to complain of provided good harvest weather ia got. This is one of the things we wish to warn farmers of now. We have had a great deal of dry weather, and nothing could be more natural than that a wet season should succeed it. Farmers must therefore be en the alert, and try to save their grain at any cost. They very frequently show great negligence in this respect, but we do not think that this is a year in which they should tempt Providence, It is, of course, quite possible they may have fine weather, but just as possible that they may not, and consequently they ought to leave nothing to chance. There is too a good prospect of high prices this season. We notice that wheat in the London market has an upward tendency, and as it has started in that direction so early in the season we should not feel at all surprised to see it get much higher yet. At any rate things are not looking so gloomy as they did some time ago, and after all we should not feel surprised if 1891 should prove a prosperous year.
