Chsistohuech, Jan. 8. To-day a middle-aged man named Thomas Sheridan died at tho hospital while under chloroform for an operation for cancer of the tongue, This morning an inquest was held on the body of a child named Emily Fall, eleven weeks old, whose parents reside in Queen street south, A verdict of death from natural causes was returned. It was shown that the child had suffered during almost the whole of its existance from diarrhoea and convulsions, which the doctor considered would be aggravated, if not caused, by tho filthy condition of the street, where washing water, slops, etc., where lying in the channels. The jury added a rider censuring the City Council for this elate of things. The coroner concurred in the yerdict. Dttbtedin, Jan. 8.

At Gore this morning a man named ; Mortimer was fined £2O and costs £l9 IBs lid for sending a telegram purporting to be signed by another person. A trotting mare was entered for sale at Green’s auction yards, and a telegram was sent to the auctioneer just before the sale, purporting to be signed by W. H. Taggart, instructing him to bid up to a pretty stiff price for the mare and secure her. The auctioneer did so and afterwards found out that Taggart had not sent the telegram, The enquiries led to th® result above mentioned. Beunnebton, Jan. 9.

Thomas Kennedy, belonging to Dunedin, met with a fatal accident at the Brunner mine last night. He was engaged in jigging trucks when a staple broke, and the trucks running down the bank he was caught by them and killed.
