Sir G, Berry, Agent- » neral to Victoria, has Written to General Booth subscribing to the East End Destitution Fund, 'He says he is confidrn , from his. experience of the Salvation Army in Australia, that the money will be wisely disbursed. General Boolh has forwarded 10,000 tickets for provisions to destitute dockers.
A flood of criticism is being poured out on General Booth's scheme. Strong objections are raised to money contributed for social reform purposes being devoted to it.
The defection of Frank Smith is destroying all chance of success for General Booth's scheme.
THE INDIAN RISING. New York, Jan. 1. Eighteen hundred Indian braves attacked Pine Ridge, and by their atrocities have placed that country and its vicinity in a state of terror. \ One regiment of cavalry had a narrow escape from destruction. I hey were very nearly entrapped by the Indians. The latter continue their depredations, ami have burnt the Catbo ic mission. It is expected that war will be declared against the Indians, and that their extermination will ensue. Jan. 2. Advices from the districts threatened by the Indians state that the 7th regiment of cavalry was surrounded in a valley near Clay Creek by a greatly superior force, and that the 9 h Regiment of Cavilry arrived just in time to rescue them. The United States Government bope to induce 3000 Indians at Badlands to peaceably surrender. Twelve regiments of infantry are now infesting the disturbed districts. Washington, Jan, 2. Indians are attempting to burn the Pine Ridge Agency, and attacking Chadcon, in Nebraska, The town is filled with women and children, and troops have been ordered to the rescue.
