The phrase “ Robbing Peter to pay Paul’’ dates back to the year 1550, when, for the repair and support of St. Paul’s Cathedral, several estates with which Westminster Abbey (which was dedicated to St, Peter) was endowed were taken away from the latter and granted to the former.
