TEMUKA.

The downpour of rain with which the New Tear opened effectually damped the spirits of‘the bulk of holiday makers, although underlying the natural feeling of disappointment of those who look upon it as the festival of the year was the thought that the country was . being greatly benefited. The principal event at Temuka was the

GOOD TEMPLXEfI’ WCKICI. This, which was held in; Victoria Park would undoubtedly have attracted a large attendance. As it was ■ a fair number assembled at the Drillshed, which was secured for the occasion, and, everybody putting a good face on the matter, a very enjoyable hour or two was spent in the morning. The children disported themselves in ronnd games, races, etc., and the elders amused themselves with conversation and in listening to the Arowhenua Brass Band. la the aftornooh, the weather showing signs of clearing up, an adjournment was made to the park, where races were organised for the little ones, and also the grown-up people, who entered heartily into the fun.,',.;: Mr G. H. Lynch had charge of the children, and Messrs Barr, Metsciia, Cooper, and Monaghan also lent effectual aid in’ the conduct; of the affair. Tho Misses A. and M, McCallum, Ju. Bowman, and E. Lynch assisted; in dispensing refreshments, catered for by Mr T, Barr in his usual good style, and worked hard to promote- each one’s enjoyment. Towards evening, headed by the band, a return was made .to the Drillshcd, where more sports were indulged in, and after due justice had been done to refreshments provided the gathering dispersed. In all .about 300 were present. In spite of the un- , propitious weather The meeting was an enjoyable one, and under more favorable circumstances would: have been most popular. SALVATION AEMT. The provisions were of an excellent character, and in abundant supply. Mr T. Barr catered. Everyone was thoroughly satisfied and enjoyed themselves immensely, despite the adverse circumstances.
