jtfew Zealand, a colony in the South Pacific consisting of the islands known as the Northern, Middle, and Stewart islands, situate about 1200 miles east of New South Wales, between 34° 21'—47° 20' S. lat. and 166* 25',—178° 35',—8. long. The entire area is estimated at 104,408 square miles, or 66,818,160 acres; of which two thirds are fitted for agriculture and grazing. It is well stocked with a healthy population of about 600,000 souls in round numbers. Government —an oligarchy tempered by an imaginary popular control. People a race renowned for its peaceful submission to an imperious and exacting governmental system and whose highest ambition is to “ learn to labor and to wait ” —to labor for the maintenance of monopoly, and to wait till its population has been driven away and its offspring domiciled in far-off lands. This property offers a good investment for the political speculator.. The, revenue consists of an assured income of £IOOO per annum and pickings, with the possibility of the bestowment by her Majesty Queen Victoria of the distinguished order of the knighthood. The present propietor is compelled to abandon his rights over the colony in consequence of ill-health and ether circumstances too numerous to mention in order that he may seek a life of repose in . Great Britain. Haring failed to effect a sale by private treaty, he has respired to submit the whole of the magnificent property to public competition, without reserve, as the whole must be disposed of before the 24th'of January, 1891.” The above describes the position in which New Zealand has been placed byj the political crisis. Mr Eolleston has been offered a reversion of the Premiership, with its attendant rights, but it is probable that he may, under the circumstances, refuse the proffered honor with its emoluments, in which case the proprietor, Sir Harry Atkinson may have to seek further afield for a purchaser. This is the first time in colonial history that a whole people has been put under the hammer. — Oamarn Mail.
