The death is announced of Dr Heinrich Sohliemann, the celebrated German arcbasologist and author, aged (8. Sr. Pktbbsbuhsj, Dec. 27. The Czarina is suffering from nervous affection,and in consequence the Czar has recalled the Ciarewitch, who is on a visit to India. Romr, Dec. 25. The steamer Shaagahibas been burnt at Wnha, a river port of China on the river Yangtyse Kiang, and 200 Chinese perished in the flames. Washinswojt, Dec. 25. President Harrison has issued an invitation to all nations to send exhibits to the great exhibition, vfbioh is to be held in Chicago in 1898. Dec. 28. The official oensns of the United States just t»ken gives the population as sixty-two and a half millions, showing aa increase of over 12 millions,since 1880. It is asserted here that the American eonsnlar agents in Canada have cheated the Government to the extent of a million dollars, aad also that they are in league with exporters. R». Jomjts, Dec. 26. The inhabitants of Isewfoandland repudiate a renewal ot the modus vivendi with regard to the French shore and denounce Lord Knutaford for asserting that sucb an arrangement will be aati factory. Manilla, Dao. 28. The Spanish troop* bombarded and subdued tbe natives of Pod ape, in the Caroline Islands, who had S2 killed. Jamep Mirtms and; William Docherty, of the Premier Permanent Building Association, convicted on a oharge of conspiring to defraud the shareholders, have been sentenced to twelve months and eighteen months respectively. Ibe charges against the others were not proved. Deo. 23. The Premier Permanent xiuilding Society prosecutions have cost the State £14,600, an amount which will probably bp swelled to £20.000 before they are lailly settled. The jury disagreed in the charge against Gourlay of conspiracy, and be was remanded till next session. Hobart, Dec. 26. R M.S, Kaikoura, from Plymouth via the Cape, arrived at 10 o'clock laßt night and sailed for Wellington at 11 o'clock this morning. She brings 46 passengers for Australian porta and 67 for New Zealand.
