THE GENERAL GATHERING.

The gathering generally must be considered the most successful yet held, and the popularity of the society is now firmly established. The attendance on the grounds is wonderful, considering the short life of the society* A t least some 8000 persons were present, and a more orderly assemblage it would be hard to meet. To the officials, from the President downwards, the highest praise is due. It is hard from so many to single out individuals for special mention. The President, besides exercising a general supervision, was active in attending to the Highland music and dancing, and this part of the programme was got through capitally. Mr A. W. Mann filled the office of starter very creditably. Mr P. Coira was a reliable timekeeper. Mr J. Lawson filled the office of ground steward with the utmost diligence. Mr J. W. Velvin was most attentive in recording the winners of the several running events, and in conjunation with Mr Maze acted as handicapper in the jumping events. Messrs Maze, Archer, Mason, Ackroyd, McLeod, Bisset, Newbury, and Wilson filled the positions of judges { of general sports very faithfully. Messrs Clark, McLaren, Macpherson, T. Connolly, M. Quinn, and M. Spillane had an arduous task as judges of music and dancing, but performed it in a manner to give eyery satisfaction. Mr E. S. Smith's handicaps proved in nearly every instance good, and showed j that his knowledge of the performers iB i more than a local one. Messrs D. | Henry and G. H. Mogridge are deserving of the highest commendation, not only for services rendered i upon the sports day, but f®r their general attention and the assiduous manner in which all duties have been performed. Two errors occurred in our report. The Bicycle Eace was won by J- Henry, instead of by McLean, and the Oddfellows' Eace by E. Carr, instead of by E. Smith, as reported. The thanks of the society are due to the judges who attended from a distance, and also to many who contributed in other ways to the snecess of the gathering.
