OUJi PUBLIC SCHOOLS. RANGITIKA VALLEY SCHOOL. SCHOOL TBEAT. The annual treat given to''the scholars attending the above school tooli place on Tuesday,23rd,and must be considered as the most yet held. Mr Wm.'Wright, a 8 usual, very courteously placed his beautiful grounds at the committee'* disposal "During the afternoon the scholars were engaged in racing, jumping, etc.. under the able guidance of Meters O'Neill. Wright (2), Lyon and ;albot, whilst their elder friends found ample amusement in various games. 'J he sports, over an adjournment was made to the "gums" for something substantial to refresh the inner man, and with an appetite made keen by their exertions all partook of a splendid tea kindly dispensed by the ladies of thei district. When the tea wan over the chairman, Mr J. Talbot, in a few appropriate remarks, in which he eulogised the work of the teacher, Mr Gillespie, and the progresi made" b» the school, distributed the prizes as follows .—Standard VI.: L I'albot 1; Standard V. : Tom Lyon 1; Standard IV.: Mageie O'Neill 1, Cissy Cook 2, Wm Cook 3, Maud O'Neill 4; .Standard III.: Eva Wright 1, Emma *albot and Archie Cook qua!) 2, Robert Telford 3 ; Standard 1 • : Raymond Wright 1, Matilda Teltord 2, Colin Lyon and John O'Neiil 3, Maggie Cook 4; Standard I.: Walter Talbot 1, Garret Allan 2. Special Prizes—Most Popular Boy in School (presented by Mr G. Pearson), Tom Lyon; Most popular Girl, Eva Wright. Regular Attendance (presented by Mr J. Gillesnie) — Buys, Tom Lyon and .Raymond Wright (also first class certificates of attendance) ; Girls, Matilda Telford. Second class certificates of attendance were given to L Talbot, W Talbot and 0 Lyon In addition each child reeeiyed a book as a reward for progress made. Aft r h; arty cheers had been given for the ladies, the committee, Mr and Mr* Wm. Wright, and the teachers, the gathering broke up, all agreeing that they had spent a very happy day. MOUNT PjSKL ROAD BOARD. The monthly meeting of the board was held in the board's office, Peel Forest on the 19th mst. Present— Hon. J. 8. A. Acland (''buirrn u>), Messrs C. G. Tripp, R. Ihew, and G. J. Dennistoun. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : From Mr S. P. Andrews, accepting the stone-breaking machine on the, terms specified in t h eir letter of the 22nd JSTovember, and enclosing a cheque as part payment of the fame. From the N Z. Railway Department in reply the board'* letter of the 29ih November, in reference to railway freights, stating that the matter would receive consideration. From the Geraldine County Council,' requesting ,pa> ment of the second instalment of the board's contribution to the Hospital and Charitable iid Board —The amount was paesed for payment. | From the Census Enumerator, requesting to be informed of "the number and date of the G zt « defining the boundaries of the M >uut Peel Road district.—The clerk stated he had supplied the information atked for. ' From the South Canterbury Hospital end Charitable Aid Board, showing the recipients of charitable aid in the ' Mount Peel district for the month of October. —The board considered .th« list and endorsed their remarks thereon ; the clerk to enquire why the names of persons outside the district had been included. Proposed by Mr Thew, seconded by the chairman, and carried—" That owing to the inconvenience and delay in country districts in forwarding anyone to the hospital the board would suggest the Hospital Board be asked to take into consideration the advisability of grantiag power to local bodies to give orders' in their own districts for admittance into the hospital." The clerk was instructed to insert notice in the papers that the cross road at Sherwood Downs is a privat road and not under the control of rrn. : board; also to give notice that any' person removing firewood or other j material from any of the plantations { i under the contiol of the board without < permission will be prosecuted. The clerk was instructed to write to the Commissioner of Crown Landu, ' sating that applications have heec I made for roads to give access to the lands on the Opuha river field undvr perpetual lease, and ask if any monev is available under the provisions of the ( Land Act 1885,and Amendment Act, 1887, for the formation of such roads The overseer's report was read and ; considered,'when it was resolved that \ in reference to the application for a ' r road to Mr A. McMaeter's land as soon as money is available for that purpose the work willbe carried out. : ? Resolved — " That notice be given t<> persons having gorse growing upon '' roads adjoining their property to grub up and remove the same." The clerk was instructed to take ' legal proceedings [for the recovery of « ill unpaid rates. After passing accounts to the ; amount of £177 Us 5d the board <• adjourned. * &
