A young couple in a Lancashire village bad been courting for several years. The young man one day said to the young woman : “ Sail, I canna marry thee.” “ How’s that ?” said she,” “ I’ve changed my mind,” said he. “ Well, I’ll tell you what we’ll do,” says she. “If folk know that it’s thee as given me up, I shanna be able to get another cbap, but if they think that I have given thee np, then I can easy get another chap. So we’ll have the banns published, and when the wedding day comes the parson will say to thee, * Wilt thou have this woman to be thy wedded wife?’ and then be will pay tome,* Wilt thon have this man to be tby wedded husband ?’ I shall say, 1 1 wtnua.” Xhe day came and when tbe miustej said “ Wilt tbon have this waman to be tbv wedded wife ?” the man answered, •« i win.” Then tbe parson said to the woman : “ Wilt thou have this man to be tby wedded husband?” and shs said,'*! will.” “Why,” said the young man, furiously, “ yon said yo« would say, ‘I winna,’ ” *• I know that,’’said the young woman, “ but I’ve changed my mind since.” LABOR MATTERS. The receipts were;—From trades societies contribution, £28,662 ; from English onions, £4060 ; from the pub ic, £4550; total, £87,273. Ihe expen. diture amounted to £87,084, The total cost of administration was £lOBl. The principal contributors were :—Shearers’ Union £I7OO ; Engineers’ Society, £1000; Gas Stokers Union, £1600; Iron-moulders’ Union, £SBOO ; Locomotive Engineers and Firemen, £2OOO ; Railway Association, £I2OO ; and Printers’ Association, £2OOO.
