POLITICAL INTELLIGENCE.
Wellington - , Dec. 13. The legal opinion re the Northern Maori election is that nothing can be done till Parliament meets. No writ will therefore be issued until then. Several appointments to the Legislative Council have been determined on. Mr Fulton and Mr Ormond are certainties; Mr Downie Stewart is not finally settled. Great pressure is being brought to bear to induce the Government to nominate Mr Pyke. The propriety of appointing Sir M. O’Rorke with a view to his ultimately becoming Speaker is also under consideration, Dec. 14. It is now freely admitted that Government will advise His Excellency to summon Parliament together about the 14tb or 15th of Jenuary, when the Government will probably resign. It is not expected that there will be two sessions next year, as in the event of the Opposition forming a Government sufficient time will be granted them to formulate a policy, and in the meantime Parliament will not prorogue, but merely adjourn for the period re- j juired, |
