LABOR MATTERS.
THE ORIGIN OF THE STRIKES. Melbourne, Dec. 34. At a banquet last evening the president of the Steamship Owners’ Association, in replying to a toast, said that the late Mr Alfred Lamb, a well known shipowner, and formerly member of the New South Wales Parliament, bad really brought ebon the recent strike. The president said that the deceased gentleman was aware that the labor bodies intended to postpone the strike until the height of the wool season, which would baye placed the employers in a worse position, and he therefore hastened matters. Sydney, Dec. 12. The Labor Commission has commenced its duties. The Secretary of the Coal Lumpers Union was the first witness examined. He said the stevedores were the chief cause of the trouble, and advocated the men dealing direct with the employers.
