TIMARU WOOL SALES.
The first wool sales of the season in Timaru was held on Tuesday last. The attendance of buyers was small, but considering the present unsatisfactory state of the wool market the biddings, fairly active. Prices ruled for fleece wools fully 2d-.to 3d, and for locks,and pieces Id to 2d below puling rates at the first sale last season. About one-half the quantity offered was sold at auction, and the auctioneers , expected to clear the balance privately. Mundsll and Co. ... 60S Canterbury Farmers' Co-operative Association ... ... ... 506 Moss Jonas ... ... ... 282 Graoie, Maclean and Co, ... ... 273 Miles, Archer and Co. 211 Webster and Co, ... ... ... «54 Total ... _ ... 2714 The following -wore the ruling prices for the day : —Halfbred, 7d to lOd; : three-quarter-hred, 7d to B^d; crossbred, to B£d (one nice lino marked 'SEA-DOWN, in the Loan and Mercantile Catalogue, fetched 8yd); merino, s£d to B|d ; halfbred pieces, 4d to 6fd; crossbred pieces, 3d to.6d ; locks, -2id.to.4yd.
The Canterbury Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Association report a fair sale for a portion of their catalogue, values ruling considerably .under last year’s rates ,The attendance of buyers was rather limited and competition was accordingly weak. Prices realised ranged from 7£d to- lOd for halfbred, 7d to Bid for three-quarter-bredy 6Jd to ! 8d for crossbred. - The G.F. Association secured top prices in the sales for a line of halfbred at lOd per lb.
ENGLISH MARKETS. London; Dec. 6. Tallow, medium mutton 265, do beef 255. Tip to date 91,000. bales of wool have been catalogued, and 80,400 sold. The English wheat market is dull, and there is no change in Continental. The American market is declining. New Zealand wheat on passage, 36s 6d; forward business . active. Foreign arrivals -moderate, and there are no Australasian cargoes .off coast or at ports off call. Silver, 4s. Dec;. 8. The wool market is steady with improvement in prices. Silver is quoted as 3s Il^d. Pabis, Dec. 8. In the Chamber of Deputies a proposal has been made to impose a surtax of 3.60 francs per 100 kilos on Australian and Cape wools imported from England. The object of this tax is to facilitate a wool market at Dunkirk. There is great stringency on the New York money market, and it is considered probable that the Bank of England, with a view of relieving it, will send gold there.
