S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The montnly meeting of the Board of Education was held on Thursday. Present Messrs S. W. Goldsmith (chairman), W. B. Howell, R. A. Barker, J. Talbot, J. Jackson, and M. Gray, and Bevs. G. Barclay and T. J. An apology was received from Mr Pearpoint.

The chairman stated that Miss Bates was recommended as p.t. at Belfield. Two resignations had been received, | those of Mr T. A. Walksr, Waimataitai, and Mr G. B. McAlpine at Upper Waitohi. A telegram had just been received from the department stating that the board is to appoint auditors for school committees' accounts in March instead of December, lhis would be an improvement. On the motion of Mr Barclay (after notice) it was resolved to rescind the motion not to sell the residence at Geraldine, the board to be consulted before any offer is accepted. Mr West reported that the schools at Waitaki village settlement, Arundel, and Seadown would be delivered to the committees next week. The frame of the residence at Hazelburn was up and nearly all material was on the ground. Messrs Jackson, Barclay, Talbot, and the chairman were appointed a building committee. Mr Gow submitted reports on the standard examinations of the following schools (percentages: P, passes; P, failures; C, class subjects; A, additional marks): —

PF C A Heok 49 31 57 41 Redcliffa 43 23 69 58 Otaio Upper 55 4 54 75 Orari South 50 10 63 65 Timaru Main 50 17 72 79 A list of candidates for scholarships was submitted, showing 31 juniors and 6 seniors, total 37, from ten schools. Last year the total was 19, the year before that 16. This year 12 got up from the Timaru public school, 6 from

Temuka, 4 from Waimate, 3 each from limaru High School and Waimataitai. The secretary intimated that the three members to retire at the end of March next were Messrs Talbot, Gray, and Pearpeint. The next meeting of the board falling on Jannary Ist, it was decided to postpone it to the 15th. It was decided to close the office for a few days at Christmas.

On the motion of Mr Barclay it was resolved to ask the Government to say what the board's share of the building grant would be. The following appointments were made on the committee's recommendations: —Miss Meredith to Arundel; Mr Eobertson to G-lenavy (permanently). Mr Mc Alpine's resignatisn was accepted subject to three months' notice. Eangitata Island asked for a male teacher instead of a female, in place of Miss Meredith leaving.—Deferred. Pleasant Point wrote referring the matter of ventilation as a job for the architect. Geraldine asked for additional ven-

tilators to the infant room, also for bell, the old one being cracked and useless. The infant room was described as suffocating, and Mr Smyth said he had visited the school twice, and that room was " perfectly awful." It was a crowded room, ou the sunny, hot side of the building, and there was aa ventilation at all. Mr West, the architect, stated there were window- i

tops opening on one aids, and large apertures in the ceiling with 14 inch trunks. He did not think there was any deficiency in the ventilation; the fault was in the direct heat from the sun; what was wanted was some means of keeping off the sun. As to Pleasant Point, he was told the old ventilator was no use and was a nuisance through rain leakage, so he told the men in patting iron on the roof in place of shingles to cnt off the ventilator hood and cover the aperture.—l he architect's explanation to be sent to Geraldine. Pleasant Point to be given £2 te remedy the defect there.

Milford asked for reconsideration of refusal to restore fencing.—Estimate of cost and amount to be subscribed by residents to be asked for. Timaru asked to have the school thoroughly cleansed and whitewashed during tin holidays.—£l2 granted. Winchester and vfaitohi Flat forwarded explanations of the teachers on the failures of the examinations.— Accepted, Kangitira Yalley asked for enlargement of school, and offered assistance to the extent of one-fourth.—To be considered when next building grant is received* Other minor matters having been dealt with the meeting terminated.
