A PLAGUE OF LOCUSTS.
Melbowrwe, Nor- 25. News from the country districts of both Victoria and New South Wales give depressing accounts of the locust plague, which is so bad this year that the insects are invading the townships and hotels.
A telegram from Hillaton.inN.S. W., says• —“ The locusts have been creating terrible havoc of late. For many years past they have not visited us in such numbers, but for the past fortnight vast armies of them have been moving in a north-west direction. For miles the grass and herbage have all but disappeared, and scores of gardens have been ruined. Vines, with strong healthy leaves and fruit bearing, have been eaten, the stumps being left, and fruit trees have been bereft of foliage. Vegetables of all kinds have been destroyed, and the Chinese gardens are a thing of the past. The wheat crops have also suffered heavily, and many are hardly worth cutting after the visit of the pest. Not content with dealing destraction broadcast outside, the inferiors of the house have also suffered vViadow blinds, curtains, clothes, etc., iave been perforated, and tanks and I wells have been polluted.”
