POLITICAL.
MR RHODES. Mr. Rhodes addressed a large meeting of electors at Pleasant Yalley on Friday evening, Mr Kyran Brophy in the chair. Mr Rhodes spoke for about an hour and a half, and was frequently applauded. He was asked a number of questions, after which on the motion ef Mr Murphy, seconded by Mr McDonald, he was accorded a hearty Tote of thanks for his address and for the frank manner in which he had answered questions. On the following evening he addressed a meeting of electors at Allandale Homestead, Fairlie Creek, in the course of which Mr .Rhodes stated that in place of being absent from the House at balls and parties, as insinuated in a pamphlet in.circulation and also openly stated by some of his opponents, he had really been present on some 44 occasions more than Mr Buxton. Mr "Wilson occupied the chair. At the close of his address he received a vote of thanks on the motion of Mr A. Dunnett,
Wellington, Nov. 29. ’Advices received by the Native Department show that the completed returns for the Northern Maori District were as follows-.—Sydney Taiwhanga 661, Tinoti Pupipupi 394, Wiremu Katene 192, Wiremu Mikihana 107. Another poll will be taken. The result of the poll for the Southern Maori Electorate was as follows : —Tamati Parata (re-elected) 148, Hene Maake Hape 107, Te Mairaki Taiaroa 76, Raniera Erihani 51. The Stewart Island returns are not yet in, but it is expected that they will increase the successful candidate’s majority. . Eastern Maori Election Carroll 1478, Wi Pere 1410. One more return to come. Dec. 1. Western Maori election —Taipui 1229, Eketone 500. There are still three returns to come in, all likely to be in iaipua’s favor. The Northern Maori district returning officer has posted the writ to the Governor with Taiwhanga's name ap elected. Nothing will be done till the writ is received. It is a question ’whether a. new election can be ordered at once, or whether Parliament must order it. Invercargill, Nov. 29. r The Minister ot Lands addressed a crowded meeting of Mataura electors at Gore last night. A t the close a vote of thanks and confidence was lost and an amendment declaring be bad Ipst the confidence of the electorate through the unsatisfactory administration of the Government was carried by 58 to 42.
