BICYCLES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —Will you kindly grant me space in your valuable paper to reply to the misleading and highly erroneous letter o£ “ Geraldine,” appearing in your issue of the Bth, in reference to bicycle riding. But for the fact that his statement is perfectly untrue, and having at the same time some regard for the truth myself, I should certainly hare treated his feeble effort at a menace with the contempt it thoroughly deserves. I observe he asks if you can inform him and the public if Government have legalised cycling on the roads. I may say the public generally are aware that no legislation is necessary to regulate cycling on the roads any more than it is necessary to legalise the driving of a conveyance—even a daisy cart. He states country horses are afraid of bicycles, but to me iu this case it seems it was the driver, and not the horses, that was afraid. Perhaps “ Geraldine” would like every cyclist whom he met to dismount and throw his machine over the fence. It is very evident “ Geraldine ” knows nothing about the pace a cyclist can attain, as he says they went dashing past. Yes! dashing past at a walking pace ! If he wishes to gain a little knowledge about the terrible machine I strongly advise him to grace by his presence the forthcoming sports at Temuka, when he will have his eyes opened in reference to the pace a cyclist can travel. In conclusion, I may state that we on passing the funeral slowed down, uncovered, our heads in the heavy rain, and observed due selemnity on such an occasion. Perhaps ” Geraldine” if placed in similar circumstance, would by his worthy example enlighten us as to the manner he would act Apologising for troubling you, I am, etc., One of Them. Temuka, Oct. 10,1890. [We certainly-do not agree with our correspondent. We do not think it is right for persons riding bicycles to face a funeral in the way he did, If an accident had occurred which caused death our correspondent would not like to have been the cause of it.— Ed.]
