CHRISTCHURCH METROPOLITAN SHOW.

Cheistchitech, Nov. 6. The Canterbury Metropolitan Agricultural and Pastoral Show opened to-day. The show on the whole is fully up to previous years, although there is a slight decrease in entries, these being 1429 against 1450 last year. There are increases of 70 in sheep and 20' in horses, and decreases in cattle, pigs, dairy produce, dogs, ' preserved meats, New Zealand manufactures. carriages and implements There is a good show of cattle, especially shorthorns. Draught horses are well up to average .quality. The show of sheep is the finest for five years. The wool is in excellent condition and would have been perfect but for the long spell of dry weather. Ihe principal prize winners are: —Fine combing merinos. A. B. Smith, Malloch and Lance, and T. leschemaker; strong combing merinos,‘A. W; Rutherford W. HcFarlane, W. CrNicholls; Eng lish Leicesters, P.D. Threlkeld, J.Bonifant, J. Haydon ; Border Leicesters, Hon. M. Holipes, McKercher Bros ; Lincolns, Hop. M Holmes, C. Withell W. Morris; Southdown, J. Deans, J. Garforth. Shorthorn cattle, though limited to a small number of breeders, are of good quality. Mr J. Deans and ;Mr J. Reid are the largest prizetakers. In aged bulls Captian Fisher’s Burnaby is first. A special feature of the cattle department is the fine show of Ayrshires exhibited by Rogers and Fleming, of Oamaru. The N.Z. and: A. Lend Company sent five Polled Angus cattle from Totara Estate: Mr A, M. Clark, of Temuka, has splendid specimens of the Hereford. His bull “ Nugget” took first place There is a good all round show of draught stock, the young animals being very promising. Mr McFarlane’s “ Coldstream”, a North Canterbury horse, took first prize in the all-aged class of entries. There is only 1 entry of three-year-old colts. In the two year old class Mr P. Cunningham’s “ Callum O’Glen” is first. There is a splendid exhibition of implements, a large proportion of which are shown at work. Other departments of the show are very good.
