A Nhw York paper recent'y offered a priz ■ for the best brief answer to the old yet i ver new, question, “ What shall we do with our girls ?” Madame Albaui-Gye w»s judge and awarded the prize to the writer of a short essay which proved to be from Ella Wbee er Wilcox. Ibis is theesseu ial p»rt :—“ Ihe foundation of society rests on its homes, 't he success of our Homes rests on the wives, Ihvrefore first of all, teach our girls how to be successful wives. Begin in their infancy to develop their characters. Teach them that j alousy is an immorality and gossip a vie'. Train them to keep the smallest promise as sacredly as an oath, and to speak of people as they wou'd speak to them. Teach them to |ook for th- best quality in everyone they meet and In notice other people’s faults only to avoid them. Train them to do all things well and to delight in helping others, and instil constantly into their minds ihe n'Cessity for sacrifice for other’s pleasure as a means of soul development. Once tjiven a firm foundation of character like llii-, which the poorest as well as the rich st parents can give io their girls, and no matter what necessity arises they wi 1 be ab‘e to rise above it.”
