FATAL ACCIDENT.

A terrible accident, which resulted in the instantaneous death of Mr Denis Salliran, of Kerryto^n, occurred yes'erd >y afternoon on the ro id opposite the Maori Pah, Temnk*. Mr M, Scannell was removing with his traction engine a but belonging to Mr P.Brosoahan from the Levels Plains to Waitohi. Mr Scaunell was driving, and with him on the engine was Mr Brosnahan, while the deceased was inside the hut. Just at the place indicated, a swagger, who was walking by die engine, directed the attention to the fact that a chain which passed underneath the hnt ahd. was fastened to the engine had become lose. Without giving Mr any intimation, the deceased went down through the hole in the flooring where the chimney had been to fasten this chain, and was caught under the trolly on which the hut was being removed, Mr Scanned of course knew nothing of this, d consequently the deceased was dragged along for about a chain before the swagger noticed what had happ p n°-d and called ont to stop the engine. When this was done it was found that Mr Sallivan »as quite dead, and very much disfigured. Information was at once given to the police ; Constable Morton was soon on the spot, and had the body removed to the St*r Hots’. Ths accident was one of a most extraordinary nature, and n<s one can understand how the deceased could have got where he did, as it could easily hsve been seen that no one could escape death there. Of course no blame can be attached to Messrs .Scannell and Brosnahan, as they t were travelling on the engine and conld : hot she what was going on in the hot. Mr buUi'yan was over 50 yeans of age, and lived on a small farm at Kerry town. He leaves a widow with about 12 children, some of whom are grown up and able lb do fof themselves, while one is an infant in arms. He was a vary respectable man, Md was highly esteemed by every one to Whom be was known. An inquest will be | held. I
