i Captain Campbell, of ..the ship Hoogley, from Melbourne, has cleared up the mystery of the schooner jCarmelite, of Vancouver (British Columbia), which left Sydney on [December 27th. and has not since been heard from. 1 The Hoogley left Sydney on January 30, and during the Utter . part of J'ebruaryi she sighted the Carmelite on fire. The Hcbgley went to the schooner’s assistance and the two crews worked fori fire days and nights, hut deuld not extinguish the Are. , Finally the flames drove the crew to the boats and they were taken on board the Hooglst; The latter vessel then mad ß for Valparaiso, but encountered a'cyolone, and was driven out of''her course. Then the provisions ran low and the supplies of fresh water gave out, after which the sufferings of the two crews became intense. One man suffering from delirium jumped overboard and was drowned. Eventually out of a total of twenty-one men only eight were left to work the ship. When the stock of provisions was gone, death stared the sailors in the face. Happily a Ismail amount of brandy had been ■ayed, and this prolonged their existence until May 10, when the men were so weak that they could no longer trim the ship’s sails. The Hoogley then drifted towards the
c o aß t, and was finally met by the guano steamer El Eey, wMch towed her to Ascension Island.
