Then the provisions ran low and the supplies of fresh water gave out, after which the sufferings of the two crews became intense. One man suffering from delirium jumped overboard and was drowned. Eventually out of a total of twenty-one men only eight were left to work the ship. When the stock of provisions was gone, death stared the sailors in the face. Happily a Ismail amount of brandy had been ■ayed, and this prolonged their existence until May 10, when the men were so weak that they could no longer trim the ship’s sails. The Hoogley then drifted towards the
