TIMAR U HARBOR BOARD.

* The monthly meeting of the 9 hove board was. held at Timaru on Wednesday. Present—Mr B. Acton (chairman), Captains Woollcombe /arid 1 Sutter,; Messrs T. Teschemaker,. J. Talbot, J. Wilson, I. L. Morris, F. R. Flatman, B- A. Barker, J. Mqnchegtpr, ap4 J). B°SB- - was read as follows:

From the Mount, Peel Eoad Board, regarding a statement in thq House of Kepresentqtjyea that; the gating" Amendment Bill had been submitted to and approved by all tho local bodiesinterested. This was not the case, as, the Moqnt 3R-qa4 Poar4 h&4 nqt heep The stated, that, when sending oqt the circular to the local bodies with a copy of the bill he had by an, oversight forgotten to send, one to the Mount Peel Eoad Board. He had sent an apology to the board.-—The chairman said no one had been authorised by the board to make the statement referred to. . ,i ■ From thq JV’paf.tme.nfc in re the Lyttelton qaae. It was suggested that the bhaw Savlile Qotqpany should ]>e qalled qpqp to remoye *bq vyrech of shin, hut no aption wqs taken, l?rom Mr j. Darling, dated 9th ( August, informing the board that the

Mana sailed from the Clyde on the) sth of that month, under command of Captain Chenowisle. HARBORMASTER'S REPORT.

The harbormaster reported the, arrival of ,22 steam and- G sailing! vessels, and the departure of 22 steam and 9 sailing vessels during August, i The weather during the month was fine. TRAVELLING SHINGLE. . The engineer read a Jong report on; the travelling shingle He believed that it would not be necessary in the near future to remove the shingle as al matter of necessity, but he thought it' would be well to experiment on the subject in time. He suggested to get; the JPriestrfan dredge fittpd up _to lift! the shingle and carry it away in the Taniwlia. n •

In reply (to questions the engineer, said he bad not calculated the quantity ■ of shingle added to the accumulation.. It was hard to say what effect the lifting random blocks from : the] breakwater hsd had, but he thought it i had Jbad . .some good effect, The i shingle had continued to accumulate ] because there had been no check uponj it by heavy-south-east seas; there hadbeen none lor four years, while! southerly breezes had been sweeping! the shingle up to the (breakwater. A j heavy south-east sea would scour it back. ■ - :

Mr Tescheraaker thought: this could j only be a temporary effect afclbe best.: The shingle would be merely shifted a little way south, to be brought back again yery soon. ; The chairman said the most serious objection to allowing the beaph to grew into; deeper water was that the destruction of. the shingle by attrition would be greater, and that meant the growth of the sand banks which bad been brought before the notice of the, board-at-two pievious meetings. Tin- { doubtedly. the growth of those sand banka wasJeniiirely due to the destruction of the shingle. • Mr Teschemaker: The sand is only the'shihgle in auothbr shape. The chairman : 1 Tes' and it is worse to deal with. It had been agreed that they shGUld hot rnention the shingle again until it reacted a ; certain point, but that wag. before those sand banks wereheai*d : Bf. Captain Sutter thought nothing of the, sand banks, because heavy seas, by disturbing" the bottom, would shift them.. As to the engineerV exjjeri;meojfc he Wa.s strongly against taking ! the Taniwba frpm her proper duty'for any such thing. If the work was to be done in that way a hopper barge should be got and towed in, and out ,i by the tug Hja idea; was that the shingle should be lifted by'an engine and trucks., j Mr'Teschemaker desired complete estimates of tjbe cost before agreeing !to the experiment. V The engineer, explained that he, proposed to place the Priektman crane on the breakwater, to lift shingle from ; the sea-face of the beach, where the; sea, wpuld keep 'up,' the supply, \dis- 5 charge it into a hopper, and from the hopper by a shoot into the dredge. The hopper and shoot would cost about £2OO, whilst a railway plant would cost £I2OO to £ISOO. To make his experiment there would be the loss also of three months’ dredging.

Mr Teschemaker would like to know whether the shingle could be shifted in that way at a moderate cost. The chairman said that Ihe experiment proposed would give a practical answer to that question, H© was glad the suggestion .hud been made, for the board, must keep steadily: m viety,. what , hp considered would , be their greatest, difliculty. Whatever made was adopted,V,they , would have to direct their attention to the matter of removal. . , , a - j This matter .was held oyer for further consideration. It was agreed that a , new grab for boulders b® ordered, ! ~ , ACCOUNTS. : ’ The wharf returns .from the rail way s for the.four weeks ending August 16ih were £4*BB 65,8 d.. In reply <to; a* question the secretary said the return for the last three weeks would be next to nothing, Ai member remarked that ll}6 business was only postponed, tbe material for shipment was accumulating and must be got away. Other members said a great depl was being lost to the port, it being carried by rail ; . Accounts to the amount of £5403 17s lOd were passed for payment. This included £SOOO on interest account, i The board then rose.
