SUPREME COURT.

Dunedin, Sept. 4. At the Supreme Court to-day John Kay Waters and Adam Elliot, alias Stewart, pleaded not guilty to an indictment, charging them with conspiracy. This case arose out of the discovery of a still in Walker street, in which a man named Dennelly was found in custody, while Waters informed the Commissioner of Customs. The two men afterwards went to Invercargill, where apparently the same tactics were to have been pursued. Both were found guilty, and the jury recommended Elliot to mercy. Mr Justice Williams sentenced Waters to two years’ imprisonment, and expressed regret that he could not make it heavier. Elliot was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. ; Chbistchuech, Sept. 4, In the Supreme Court to-day a verdict was given for defendant in the case brought by the Canterbury Saleyards Company against Mr E. Waymouth, the auditor, to recover the amount of the defalcations of P t Brook, late secretary to the company. The jury found that Mr Waymouth had not been guilty of negligence as auditor,
