A plan was received of the Orari settlement- This had been applied for in order that an application made by Mr W. Mason for formation and shingling in front of his store might be dealt with.—The question of shingling was deferred for the present; The clerk to ascertain if any moneys were accruing from the sale of sections in the Orari township,

OTEESEBB'S EEPOET. The overseer’s report was read and dealt with as follows : “To the Chairman. v ' “ Sib, —I have the honor to report as 'follows :—Tenders have been invited for Contract No. 28 (shingling ,part of Langridge’s Road), Contract No. 27 (carting clay on Canal Reserve Road), and for Contract No. 25 fords at R«ngilata.)—Contracts Ros. 21 and 24, form-’ ing road near Smitbfield and formation Main South Road, are completed. The; contractor for shingling repairs has com-' menced work, and is now repairing at Orari.—About 12 chains of the Rangitira! Valley Road, from the end of shingled 1 road near Braddick’a farm to the R>>egiltra Creek, requires to be re-formed. The cost would probably be about £—i Talbot’s road requires repairing with river; shingle, but as this will be ; a costly work: 1 would ask the sanction of the beard; before including it with ordinary slnugl« repairs.—White’s Road :: This road has been formed full width for a distance of about 76 chains from its junction with the Milford Road, and fur the remainder of its length, abont 70 chains, has been formed from 27 to 30 feet wide on one side] About 35 chains of the last-mentioned portion runs through 1 swampy land, and, unless during exceptionally fine weather, is not fit to carry a load. The portion that has been formed from one side only requires to be made at least 45 feet in width. The cost of doing this would be about £—. The part that has been formed full width runs through fairly solid ground, but cuts up badly if carted on during wet weather. lam of opinion that this road is used more than any other of the same class in the district, and woold therefore recommend that the shingling of it be undertaken at an early date.—Kirk’s Road : For a length of about 70 chains from its junction with the Main Waitohi Road this load is worn very flat and requires to be re-formed for that length. The remainder of the road, about 80 chains, does not require much doing to it, except the ruts filling in and tussocks cutting off. The ford at the second creek on this road wants repairing, and the creek, which at this place tuns along the road reserve, requires to be straightened; there are also three wooden culverts that are apparently rotten, and require replacing.—The Pound : The dwelling-house has been cleaned and minor repairs done to windows, doors, etc. The outer fence of the sheep yards is decayed and requires renewing. The cost would be about £—. The outside of the dwelling-house and inside of kitchen require painting; the cost of two coats would be £6 5s. —A stock of pipes is required.—l have, etc., “ F. Archer.”

It was resolved to invite tenders for carting shingle for Talbot’s road, also to invite tenders for formation and part shingling on White’s road, Milford. The overseer was instructed to have repairs effected to Kirk’s road, the same to be done by contract. It was resolved to have the sheep yards at pound repaired, the question of painting the premises to be deferred.

| STB AT HOUSES, ETC. 1 Mr J, Woodhead asked what was to be done in reference to the number of old horses straying upon the! road. They were a great nuisance, i The chairman said .that he had seen J the poundkeeper and the police on the subject, and they had agreed to take /the steps authorised by the Impounding Act, viz , to impound the horses, land if not claimed the following day to obtain an order from a Justice of the Peace for their destruction. I Tenders 1 for *! implements' and repairs, Totara Strhet,’ were opened' end dealt with as follows:—Mr J. Beckley, £27; Mr G. Ward, £3s'6s Bd.iMr Williams moved and'Mr Dunlop seconded, “ That Mr Beckley’s tender ho dccepted.”' ; Mr White moved, 11 That seeing wo are on the eVe of a general election, no tender be accepted.” Mr Sherratt seconded this.

Mr Dunlop;thought thaStaa they had called tenders for the;work they should accept one, unless they were both too high. The amount of the tenders -was not much above the board’s estimate.

Mr White thought it was a good deal of. money to spend on a road where there were ho ratepayers. Mr Mundell said the road ' led through the- bush; which was a g*reat rqoor.t of pffiasdre parties from tance, and they mijght possibly have an accident there. , Mr Sherratt said the road had served well enough for years;past, when’there was ten times more'carcage of timber, etc, than there -would ever be Again, as the bush was .now; about gone, and he did not think the board was justified in speeding so/much of the ratepayers money there now. Mr , Williams!'.said the ratepayers used* it to ttqrt timber/and goods up. i Mr White said be did not want con-tracts-going on when the board went out of,office.)

The chairman; said he was opposed i to | calling,. tenders and then throwing, them ; out, pntysg. .they were all too high. If the jWorks Committee con-; sidered the work required doing, and called; tenders’for it, a tender should be accepted, except upon the above grounds. They would have at least itb shingle the road, and they had never done anything there since taking the road over. Mr Williams’ motion was then put and carried. LEASING SECTIONS.
