CALEDONIAN FANCY-DRESS BALL.
Tbe Caledonian ball which was held last Thursday evening in the Volunteer Diillshed, Temuka, was a great success. There were considerably over 100 couples present, ani all arrangements were on a generous scale. The hall was beautifully decorated, and in the centre was placed the piano oh a. raised platform smothered in evergreens. Messrs Levens and Goodwillie'B music was excellent. Dancing commenced at 9 o'clock by a grand march, with lime-light effects, and the scane was really beautiful. Tbe supper was laid out in the old Volunteer Hall, which also waß splendidly decorated. Too much praise cannot be given to; Mr McCaskill for the excellence of the spread. Tt was really splendid, the quality being equal 10 the tasteful way in which it was laid out, and tbe president and offtcers expressed themselves more than satisfied with tbe provisions made in this depart? ment. The ball wes the greatest event of tbe kind which has hitherto taken place in Temuka. The dresses were of a very varied and prettv kind, but very tew went in for the comic element. The best get-up in the room was that of Mr Pinckney, who dressed up as a sun-browned swagjjer with swug and billy, and cut rather an unusual figure when dancing with the belle of the bal>. He narrowly being "run in " by Dt Hayes, who made a splendid specimen of the police " foorce." Mr J. Fileuian, , as the white-eyed K*fSr, got up very | comically, while.. Miss' Ada Erwood, as
