AUCTIONEERS’ REPORTS,

GERALDINE. Messrs J. M undell and Co. report, sales for the week ended August, 9th, | 1890, as follows : ! During the past week at auction! and privately, several large lines of: fat and store sheep have, passed! through our books at prices leaving a large margin of profit to, the vendor, the supply under offer being far short* of the present demand. Our quota-* tions are as under :

Sheep —At Pleasant Point monthly! sale on Monday we sold 400 merino, ewes in lamb at 6s 6d; 270 three-! quarter-bred hoggets at 8s 3d ; 36 crossbred ewes, fat, 13s 4d, 25 cross-! bred wethers and maiden ewes at 16s. At Geraldine live stock market on Wednesday the yarding for the day was 3500. Prices were: For crossbred wethers and maiden ewes, fat; 20a, 19s, 18s 6d to 16s; crossbred! wethers and maiden ewes, stores, 1.55, ! 14s 6d to 12s 3d; merino wethers; fat, 12s, lls lOd to lls 6d ; three-quarter-bred hoggets, lls to 10s 4d; merino ewes, fat, 10s ; halfbred ewes in lamb to E.L. rams, culls, 8s 9d to 7s 6d At Washdyke yards on Thursday the yarding for this said was small. Ol our entry we sold 200 crossbred ewes at 13s 6d.

Cattle—At Pleasant Point we sold cows, springing, at £2 7s 6d. At Geraldine market we sold steers and heifers, fat, at £6 ss, £5, to £4 15s • cows, springing, £2 2s 6d ; yearling steers and heifers, £1 5s ; calves, 10s_. Pigs—Strong stores, 13s 6d, 12s, to 7s 6d ; weaners, 6s, 5s 6d, to 4s. Temuka Live Stock Market—Open‘ing sale at new yards on August 13th, 1890. TIMAKU. Messrs William Collins, and Co. report on the weekly auction held at their rooms on Saturday : Fowl wheat is in good demand, for screened samples 2s 6d per bushel was obtained ; other sorts 2s 2d to 2s 3d (more can be placed at the same figures). Seed oats —One line brought Is 3d per bushel, stained and seedy Is 2d do. Canadians are in good request at Is 6d to Is 8d per bushel. Derwent potatoes 48s t* 52s 6d per ton (sacks in), kidney do 35s to 42s 6d per ton. Carcase pork, 3d to 3|d per lb, live pigs 12s 6d to 15s 9d each. - Cheese, 3d per lb. Poultry and general sundries sold well during the day, also roped onions which brought £lB 10s per ton. Several lines of half and crossbred sheepskins were bought during the day at 5s 3d to 5s 6d each ; skins with the pelts damaged bring considerobly less; dead wool 7d to 7£d per lb.

Messrs Gracie, Maclean and Co. report for the past fortnijght, as follows:

Horses—There is slill a brisk demand for draughts suitable for farin work. Hacks and light harness horses of good quality are also saleable at fair prices, but weedy sorts are next to valueless. At the Timaru Horse Bazaar our entries have been average. We quote sales of medium to good draughts at from £ls to £22 10s ; aged and inferior, £8 to £lO 10s; hacks up to £2O.

Sheep Pleasant Point, on the 4th inst., there was a fair entry, and nearly every line yarded changed hands at prices highly satisfactory to the sellers. We sold 25 fat ewes at 13s 6d, 221 2-tooths at 15s, §25 hoggets at 12s, 200 fat ewes at 12s 6d, 30 do do at 12s 7d, At Washdyke yards on the 7th inst. we disposed of 242 half and tbree-quarterbred fat sheep at 16s 6d, 34 do do at 15s, 100 2-tooths at 16s 9d, 262 2-tooths at 15s lOd.

Cattle—At the Pleasant Point sale there was abetter entry of both fat stores, and more business effected than for some months past. Sixteen head; of cattle were sold at equal to 22s 6d per 1001b —cows and heifers in milk and springing to calve, £1 15s to £5 ss; yearling, 10s to 16s; 2-year-old steers, £2 15s to £4 ss.

Sheepskins—At our sale on the 30th July we sold best crossbreds at 4s to 5s 6d; medium, 2s 6d to 3s 9d; merinos up to 4s Bd. Privately we placed 850 factory skins.

OHBIBTCHUBCH CORN EXCHANGE.

The following is the Corn Exchange report (per N. P. Moyers, Secretary), fop the week ending Friday, August Bth

There has been $ fair amount of business done during the week- An unsettled feeling, however, prevails owing to the labor manifesto, and should this uneasiness continue sales may be difficult to effect. Wheat is in good demand, and prices are firm at quotations, Oats—Samples of prime fit for export to the London market are saleable, whilst little or no business is passing in other grades. Barley—No malting samples on offer ; feed .descriptions totally neglected. Beans—A slight .enquiry continues tor export. Fcas—Blue prussiajgi still hold their own ,in yalpe, whilst feed descriptions are difficult to /juit. Grass Seed—Eyegrass is held principally by merchants. Any parcels offering have been taken at full rates. 'I h,e closes firm. Cocksfoot: The same remarks apply. Colonialgrown Clover—Several pargefs have been brought in during the week. Buyers are at the moment offering a shade under growers’ values. The quality as compared with the imported aeed is good. It is free from the

impurities which many of tfie parcels; of imported seed only too oftenj contain. Potatoes—The prospects are not at the moment cheering, Sydney, advices being unsatisfactory. Dairy! —Pew transactions, as isusuall at this season, can be noted. Prices, 'are, nominally, at quotations. Ourj quotations for the week are as fpl-j lows:— . ■ i

Store Sheep—There , was a entry and an excellent demand for good sorts. Aged crossbred, ew.es, in lamb, brought up t ito 10s 7d ; some lines of good-quality crossbreds, 4 and 6-tooth, sold at from 9s 8d to 13s 6d. while some 2-tooths of the same kind realised 14s 9d.

Pat Sheep—6ooo were yarded, but the price remained f ;firm, no muttoh deserving the name being sold at less than 2fd per lb, while for some specially prime lines as much as 3|d per lb net weight was -paid, An exexceptionally; fine , lino of hoggets, from Mr M'Heudry’s Lauriaton farm, Ashburton, realised up to 34a 6d, but these were undoubtedly the heaviest sheep ever seen at the Addington Tards,

Pat Cattle—The entry of beef was small, apd there was nothing .representing first quality. The demand, however, was good, and up to 24s per IOQIb was procured for the best quality sold, while the average ®f that submitted went from 21s to 22a 6d. Messrs H, Matson and Co. sold for clients heifers at from £4 12s 6d to £8 2s 6d, and steers at from £6 10s to £8 15a; also cows at from £3 5s to &5 7s 6d.

Pigs—All lots offered realised fully per lb.

DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS

The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday:—

Wheat— Market dull in the absence of millers’ operating, having heavy stocks on hand,, and, bakers are yet provided with flour for two months to come. Prime milling sorts, 3s 3d to 3s sid; second quality, 3s to 3s 2d, for second-class flour; soft-conditioned wheat, 2s lOd. Fowls’ wheat is in' good demand. Whole, 2s 6d to 2s 9d; medium and broken, 2s to. 2s 4d.

Barley—None transacting. Nominally for malting, 2f* 7d to 2s lOd ; for milling, 2s 3d to 2s j6d ; feed, Is 8d to 2s Id (ex store)., 1 Oats—Yery dull during the week. Best milling, Is to Is Ad ; bright plump feed, Is 2d to. 15,,3d ; off-color andjinusty, Is (all sacks extra—ex store). Hops—Best Nelson, 7id to Bd. Linseed, £ls to £l6. Onions have risen to £l3 per ton, and, are scarce. Flour—Timaru and Oamaru roller, £0; 100’s, £9 10s; 50’s, £9 15a, fe.b, those ports, 5s more locally; Oamaru, town, apd southern stonemade, £8 6s; £8 15s. Pearl barley, £ls to £l6.

Oatmeal—Long-ton bulk, £8 10*; short-ton bulk, £8; 25’s, £8 10s; 7’s, £lO 10s. Bran, £2 10s f.o.b. Timaru ; £3 here. Sharps, £4 here; £3 15s f.o.b. Timaru

Potatoes —Kidneys are not saleable, and only quote, nominally, 40s. Derwents (UamaTu), £3 to £3 sa; southern, £2 15s to £2 17a 6d.

Pigs are keeping low in price. Good bacon pigs to 3d ; hams, 7d to 8d j rolls and flitches, 5d to 6d.

Chaf£—Good heavy clean-cut oaten, £2 5s to £2 7s 6d ; light and inferior, 30s to 355. Turnips, 14s to 15s, on truck; carrots, 30a per ton, sacks e?tra, Straw —Qatpp and wheaten, 30s to 355.

Hay-Oaten, £2losj clover and ryegrass,. £3 ss. Butter—Prime salt only in demand to 7|d; off sorts not saleable j fresh butter scarce.

Eggs in full supply. Honey, 4£d to 5d ; section honey, 8d-

Cheese dull of sale. Eactory, 4d ; loaves, 4|d; Abaroa, 3d to leaves, 3|-d to 4d. Grjjiss ftypgrass, 3s 6d to 5s 6d { cocksfoot, 4d to 5d j seconds, 3d to S^d; timothy, £IB for dean seed.

Sheepskins —At the usual auction sales on Tuesday butchers* green .cpossbyeds sold from 3s 6d to 4s 6d ; do hsiltbreds, ftd to §s •do merinos, 2a 6d to 3s 6d dry crossbreds, 2§ to 5s 9d ; do rxerinoa, 2s to ss; lambskins, 2s to 2s 6d ; pells, 6d to 9d.

Hides—The market is kept fairly supplied' with ’' medium and light weights, but 1 the farthers coinplain of the very short supply ;! of gdodi heavy .'hides, 'add arijp sucb coding' to Banci ‘big prices. Quotationy unaltered. " ' 1

Tail low—Supplies to hand’are. shorty and all are taken up ! by‘local manur facturers at late quotations, which remain unaltered ’ Viz., 1 for 1 prime , 1 medium, 14s to I7s ; inferior, 1 9s to 12s 1 6d ; rough fat, 9s to ■ 125. : 1

DUNEDIN -STOCK - MARKETS.

At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday the following business; was transacted;—

Pat Cattle—l 76; bead were yarded, about half; being prime, the 'balance light, and ; inferior ; quality.. Por the former there was a good demand at about' last week’s ,'iprices, ; while, the latter was dull of’ salp, l and, showed a considerable decline ; on :T late I rates, ! several pens bping turnpd out. Pigs—Only 73 of . all : sorts came forward, for which there was fair;competition. Suckers sold from 8s to 12s 6d; stores, 18s to 235; porkers, 28s to 31s, and baconers from 37s to 44a. '
