MEETING OF RATEPAYERS.

A meeting of ratepayers in the Pleasant Yalloy-Kakahu Flat district was held at Mr J. Connolly’s on Thursday evening last for the purpose of considering the advisability or otherwise of requesting the Geraldine County Council to form a race for the district. Only about fourteen ratepayers attended. Mr J. Earl forwarded by his son a letter expressing his regret at being unable to attend, owing to illness, but stating that he was decidedly in favor of the race.

A map of the district, with the suggested boundaries for the waterrace district, was placed upon the table, and it was intimated the boundaries were open to alteration. Mr J. Allen objected very strongly to being included in the district, H© contended that he had as much water on his land as he required, and expressed his determination to oppose by every means in his power being included in the district, or having the race brought through his property. Mr J. Gregan was also opposed to the race.

1 hose present thought the meeting could hardly take any decisive steps in the matter, as it could not be called a representative one. Several of the largest ratepayers in the district were absent, and it was suggested that the meeting should be adjourned to a future date.

Mr Allen proposed, and Mr J. Gregan seconded —“ That this meeting stands adjourned for seven years from this date.”

Messrs Brophy and J. Connolly both spoke in favor of the race, and the former moved and the latter seconded as an amendment “ That this meeting stands adjourned to a future date.”

The amendment on being put was carried by five to four, and after a very lively, not to say stormy meetiag, those present adjourned to the spacious farm kitchen and discussed an abundant and substantial supper, prepared by the good lady of the house.
