TIMAKU,
i Messrs William Collins, and Co. jreport a fair amount ©f business 'during the week and under the 'hammer. On Saturday the entries 'were numerous and were placed at the figures:—Feed oats, Is 3d iper bushel; Canadians, Is 6d do; Tarjtarians, Is 4d. In fowl wheat 2s 4d iper bushel was got for a nice level line ; lots were sold by the sack ifrom 6s to Bs. Kidney potatoes are beginning to move off, and when the jweather takes up we expect to see a jgood demand for them. Derwents, !45s to 50s per ton (ex store); large size cheeses B|d per lb; bacon pork, 3d to 3fd per lb; onions, per lb (good demand); fowls, 3s por pair; .hares, 10s per dozen.
Mr E. R. Goinness (for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile AgencyCompany, Limited) reports for the week ending August 2nd ; Cattle —At the Washdyke yards and other fixtures the entries of both fat and stores have been excessively small, There is very little prime quality in the district. We quote 20s for prime and 17s 6d to 18s per 1001 b for ordinary. Stores—Nothing doing, only a few old cows and inferior youngsters representing the yardings. FheeD —At the Geraldine yards on the 22nd ult. (for Mr A. E. Cox) we had a very successful sale. Every line was keenly competed for, and sold under the hammer at very satisfactory prices to vendors. The entries were on account of the following clients:— Or. Pinckney, W. and H. McAulay, C. Squires, K. Smith, John G-rant, D. Guthrie, E. M. Goodwin, J. Stewart, W. P. Turton, H. S. Helem and others. In fat sheep we sold merino wethers at 12s 9d; crossbred ewes and wethers at 17s to 17s 5d (the latter price was obtained for a nice line sent forward by Mr W. P. Turton). Stores —Half-bred 2-tooths, 12s 9d; do crossbreds, 14s lOd to 12s Id; cull half-bred hoggets, 8s 7d ; crossbred do, 10s 8d; do ewes in lamb, 9s lid to 10s lid; merino wethers, 5s 6d; do ewes in lamb, 4s id, very poor. At Washdyke yardß very poor entries came forward. Those that do patronise this central market are rewarded by always getting good values.
Sheepskins and Wool —On Wednesday last, at our usual fortnightly sale, there was a good attendance of buyers, and spirited bidding being the order of the day good values were obtained. Skins sold all round at an advance of 3d to 6d per skin on last sale. Our sales by auction and privately were 3146, and 11 bags wool, which realised as follows:—Best factory crossbreds, 5s 6d to 5s 7d; do factory crossbreds, 5s to 5s 4d; second quality, 4s 3d, 4s 6d to 4s lOd ; best merinos, 3s 6d to 3s 8d ; ordinary country lots according to size and quality. Wool— Locks and pieces, very mixed and dirty, 4id; trimmings, to per lb. Pat —We have no trouble in quitting all that come forward at full current rates.
Hides —We have sold 98 at late quotations.
ENGLISH MARKETS
Loinjoir, July 31.
Two thousand bales of New Zealand hemp have been sold at an advance of about 10s per ton on last quotations. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,164,000 quarters and for the Continent 584,000 quarters. The American visible supply is 18,480,000 bushels.
! The English wheat market shows an advance of 6d. The Continental is firm, and the American has an upward tendency. A hundred and fifty thousand sovereigns have been withdrawn for the Cape and South America, and further large exports are expected. The debentures of the Argentine States are in good demand. Frozen mutton is unchanged. New Zealand beef, hind quarters, 3^d.
The total amount of reserve in the Bank of England is £12,030,000, and the proportion of reserve to liabilities 29 per cent. The market rate of discount is 4£ per cent. Money is in active demand. New Zealand hemp, good to medium quality, has been selling during the past fortnight at £2l 15s to £22. August 1.
Three packages of butter shipped in the Orient Company's steamer Oroya from Australia have arrived in splendid condition, and not tainted as most previous shipments have been. Australian butter is quoted at 80s; Danish, 925.
