St. Saviour's Church, Temuka.— Service at the above Church on Sunday evening was conducted by the Rev. Mackenzie Gibson, of Timaru, who preached from I. Cor. i., 21. There was a large congregation. In the afternoon he delivered a brief address to the scholars of the Sunday School, the subject being the Church Catechism. The rev. gentleman expressed himself as highly pleased with the answers received from, and the progress made by, the pupils. Shearers’ Union. —Mr Edgeler ha a received a letter from Mr Donnes, secre. tarv to the Shearers and Laborers Union j Timaru, to the effect that Mr Lundon, president of the Union in Waimate ) would shortly hold a meeting in Temuka and try to form a branch. The letter says that there are 500 members on the roll in Waimate, and though only seven weeks in existence in Timaru they have 150, and are increasing daily. _ He hopes to see every working man join (he union. Apparent Fraud. —ln Napier a wealthy blacksmith named Fletcher died some time age. A man named Parker, who had bought his business, produced a will showing that everything was left to himself. In the middle of the court case which ensued Parker’s lawyer threw up his brief and Parker left the colony. He had discounted a number of bills with Fletcher’s name to them, and the trustees in Fletcher’s estate now refuse to acknowledge them, alleging that they are fraudulent. The Bank of New Zealand sued for several bills and got judgment for £505, £225, and £175, but the jury held the bills had been tampered with, and that th bank was negligent in not delecting that the sums before the £5 were inserted fraudulently.

Mr Philip Wareing. —We have received another delightfully interesting letter from Mr Philip Wareing, which will appear in our next issue. Masonic. Communications from the Grand Lodge of Scotland, received in Auckland, announce that the Grand Master approves of the circular Issued to the lodges ,by Sir F. Whitaker, that Provincial Grand Masters are authorised to grant dispensations to minorities of lodges where Masters retained the original charters, and accept dispensations from the Grand Lodge of New Zealand; further that neither the Grand Lodge issuing dispensations in New Zealand, nor lodges accepting the same, will be recognised as legilly constituted by Scotland. Old Claims.— The Evening Post says ; «' We learn that a writ has been issued by Sir Julius Y' gel, claiming £13,000 from the colony in connection with the floating of the five million lean, and for services rendered as loan agent during his term of office as Agent-General. Half his claim is for the recognition of services rendered, and £7OOO for damages tor dismissal from the loan agency. Sir Julius Vogel alleges that he resigned the Agent-Generalship on the understanding that he would be allowed to retain the loan agency in England for some years, and b’e paid commission on the conversion of loans." “ Baby . Ogden ” at Temuka. The Baby Ogden Company opened at Ternuka last night to a very poor house, the wet weather and counter attractions militating against the attendance. The principal attraction was the performance of “Jo,” in which the talents of the child actress received full scope. The chancier was capitally played, and although the want of proper stage accessories made the due realisation of the several scenes difficult, yet there w»s little difficulty in following the thread of the story. In the dual characters of Lady De'dlock and Mdlle. Hortense, Miss Helen Fergus displayed much dramatic ability, and Mr Laurie Dunb»r gave a good rendering of Mr Tulkinghorn, The other characters were all well sustained, and it is to be regretted that they were so unfortunate in their selection of so inopportnne a day for paying Temuka a visit. The Catholic Church.— At the Roman Catholic Church last Sunday the Rev. Father Purtnuis celebrated mass at the usual hour. The Rev. Father Fauvel announced that though he had greatly improved duiing the past week he was still far from well, and was not likely to bo able to attend his work as heretofore for some months yet. as he knew there wore no priests available in . this diocese, he applied to Archbishop Redwood for a curate, and he had kindly got one for him. He was deeply indebtedly—and the whole whole parish w«s indebted—to H'a Grace the Archbishop in this matter. It was not the Archbishop’s duty to provide a p r j eß t—he had nohing now to do with this diocese—but such was the love he bore for the parish of Temuka that -he had gone to great trouble to give them a priest. The Archbishop had not enough priests for his own diocese, yet he had given them one, and, therefore, they were very much indebted to him. He had hopes that the curate would arrive during the present week, and that all the functions of the Church would be carried on in the usual manner.
