CRISIS AT TONGA.

Auckland, July 22. The Wainui, from Tonga, brings the following news:—The High mißsioner of ihe Western Pacific, Sir John Thurston, visited Tonga in H.MLS, Eapid lately, The reßult is a

! startling crisis. Several Tongan chiefs swore if the Hon. Shirley Baker, Premier, remained in Tonga, he would be assassinated, together with the chief associated with him. Sir John Thurston then exercised powers under the Western Pacific Orders in Council and issued an order for Mr Baker's deportation. He was offered accommodation on H.M.S. Rapid. Mr Baker declined, and took a passage for himself and family in the Wainui. Mr Baker's goods were bundled out of his house, and all their servants left them, but the goods were afterwards returned by order of the King. Pending the departure of the Wainui, all political prisoners had been liberated. A new Tongan Ministry, composed purely of natives, has been appointed ; Tukuahe as Premier, and Tugi Minister of Lands. It is reported that officials are being sent from Fiji to assist in the administration ot affairs. Mr Campbell, Collector of Customs, is Secretary to the Cabinet.
