SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES.
In Gisborne, William Black, a labourer, was charged on the information of Constable Riddel with the murder, about the month of March, of Robert Streeter at Whatatutu. Mr Booth, R.M., granted a remand till Monday the 21st inst. The circumstances which give cause of suspicion against William Black of murdering Robert Streeter whose disappearance took place in March last are as follows; Prisoner Black, Streeter, and two others were engaged in a fencing contract on Mr Foster’s station, and their camp was in a rough bit of country eight miles from the homestead. There was illfeeling between the two men on account of the attention paid by | Black to Streeter’s wife. On Sunday as two of the camp were leaving for Whatatutu for stores, Streeter and Black to go shooting, but Black returned without Streeter, and in reply to questions said that they had quarrelled, that the latter had taken the '‘huff” and cleared. Since that time Black has been several times m town and has lived with Mrs Streeter as man and wife, wearing the dead man’s clothes. Since the disappearance was reported strict inquiries have been made, but no trace found of Streeter, and it is most unlikely that he could come away from the place without calling at other places en route , Inquiries are being made by every police station throughout the colony for Streeter, and a search party is to scour the country in the vicinity of the camp in the hope ot coming across human remains. Black was, some time ago charged with criminally assaulting an old Maori woman of 90, who, however, condoned tbe offence.
