ORARI BRIDGE.

ro THE EDITOR. / Bib,— lt is right the ratepayers should see a copy of my letter to the Geraldine County Council of July Bth (which I hope may have some weight), accompanied with a petition from the Mount Peel and Geraldine Road Districts containing the signatures of 244 ratepayers, and I enclose it for publication.—l am, etc., 0, G. Tripp.

“ Orari Gorge, 7th July, 1890. , “ Sib, —You will receive a petition from the Mount Peel Road Board and the Geraldine Road Board Districts respecting the state of the Orari Bridge. I had occasion to; send by, the Orari Bridge, a month since, between 3000 and 4000 sheep. I was afraid to let them cross the bridge, so I had them driven over the shingle, as there was then little water in the river. It would never have done to have had half their legs broken from the insecure state the planking was in. Ibis petitions is signed by ratepayers throughout the whole district, and will show the council that the' resolutions passed at the public meeting in Geraldine to pay a rate for keeping the bridges in the •whole county in thorough repair was the real wish of the district. 1 think the council must now admit that the meeting was a real representative one. It was duly advertised in the papers, and all the resolutions to be proposed (but one) were before .the ratepayers and the public; therefore no one was taken unawares by what was intended to be proposed, and every resolution was carried unanimously. If the Orari bridge is not kept open the Geraldine Pair will be almost knocked on the bead—property will fall 25 per oent.-r- ---_ I _ 11 _ ii .i * • . : '

sheep will not be worth so much by Is 0d to 2s 9 head, consequently land will fall in value. You will observe? the petition is signed by Mr Acland, Mr Dennistoua, Mr R. Mackay (of Uaincliff), Mr Thew, and myself, all members ' of the Mount Peel Road sqard, Wo one, to my knowledge, had any frefityttoii in signing. lam quite certain that; if a‘dipept |iqe, a break, is not kept up between Welaqn and Invercargill, the county must go back. I feel certain in my mind that if the pouncil only put a stock bridge over the Pfrreopa r|ver f in the place of. a traffic bridge, befqrq Iqjjg q trafge bridge will be built by the side of thetraffic bridge. I drew the attention qf the ratepayers to the petition to be |ign,ed, jq tjie of july l§t. —I hqye tbp fipnqr to hfy sir, your obedient servant, \ “ C. G. Tejee. “ To the Chairman of the Geraldinp 1
