FOOTBALL.

WAIHI SECOND V. COLONIALS.

Wet as last Thursday was the Waihi boys started from Winchester in Mr MundeU’s coach punctually at one o’clock. All seemed to enjoy the drive, arriving in Timaru at three o’clock. After a few minutes’ stay at the Club Hotel they made the best of their way over muddy roads to the scene of action. Both teams had to fill up their ranks as best they could, being short of the picked team. However, when they faced each other Waihi had 14 and the Colonials 15. In appearance the teams seemed ,to be equally matched, and the result was a very even match. E. Morrison captained the Waihi and Q-. Thompson the Colonials. Brinkman kicked off for Waihi, and the first spell all through was fast and open. A. Moore through a run of J. Northam’s got over the line, but the try was disallowed. Early in the first spell Hooper for the Colonials secured the first try, but no goal resulted. The Colonials had decidedly the best ot the first spell. In the second spell Waihi had the best of the game, but were unable to score. The few spectators present were much pleased with the way all the players took refuge in the mud. At last the whistle sounded, and after a sharp walk they arrived at the Club Hotel, where, after getting rid of their mud-stained attire, they were treated by the Colonial boys to a splendid repast. Winging followed for a while, after which they started fer home, getting back to Winchester shortly after 11 o’clock, well satisfied with the day’s outing. Mr T. Hart had the very responsible duty of acting as referee and umpiring for both teams, and he is to be congratulated on giving, general satisfaction.

On Saturday a football match was played at Temuka between teams from the Winchester and Temuka Public Schools. The game resulted in a win for the visitors by five points to one. Messrs Whately and Q-oldstone umpired for Winchester and Temuka respectively, and Mr George Velvin acted as referee.

The following team has been selected to represent Temuka in the match against Waihi, which takes place at Temuka on Saturday next: Full back F. Storey; three quarters, G. Velvin, B. McLeod, and E. Eoberfes, half backs, McCallum and Findlay. Forwards, Carr, Gaffaney, Polascbek, Fitzgerald, Gillespie, Anderson, Austin Lavery, and Brosnahan. Emergencies, Kroon, and Logan. Practise will be held every afternoon and all members are requested to attend.
